Remember Martha Mitchell and the Watergate Scandal?
I just ran across an interesting article about it written in 1972. The author believed at that time that a shadow fascist government was being run by the CIA with Richard Nixon as the front puppet. She believed that the recently installed fascist Greek government was tied to the oil interests that were funding Nixon’s campaign, which is why Nixon selected Spiro Agnew as his running mate. He had been told that if he didn’t the oil money contributions would stop.

When the Watergate scandal broke, it was Martha Mitchell, wife of Attorney General, John Mitchell and who was often self-medicated with martinis that started calling up reporters about her fears that Mitchell was being set up as a scapegoat. The Mitchells lived at the Watergate at that time. Among those reporters were Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. She didn’t know how much John was really involved.

When it became apparent to Nixon and Mitchell that she couldn’t be shut up, they had her kidnapped and medicated. She still managed to call a reporter in the middle of the night about the incident. Well, the rest as they say is history.

This article would have been considered a bit way out there back in 1972. Even though Nixon and his administration were considered crooks, no one could make the mental leap to fascism and that the CIA was really the power behind the throne. But in the light of the events of today, it seems almost prophetic. Since then the connections between that era and this one starts giving you an aha! moment, especially with the recent CIA scandals and proposed restructuring.

Why Was Martha Mitchell Kidnapped?

by Mae Brussell (from The Realist, August 1972)

Here’s a sample.

<snip>
This year, 1972, is a very important year in American history. Provisions have been made to eliminate the outdated Constitution. The new version of democratic rights does not resemble anything but a fascist dictatorship. A new cabinet, designed by Roy Ash of Litton industries, would trim away every department except those of Defense, Treasury, State and Justice.

The same groups of people who put Hitler into power, and revived fascism in Greece and other countries, are determined to maintain their power and control over other people's lives. This decisive year will determine if that power will be maintained by manipulating candidates, assassinating politicians, or by creating a situation where martial law will become necessary so that elections can be cancelled.

Whenever a populist candidate appears to win an election which could bring about economic or social improvements for the masses, that person must be removed. The CIA that killed President Kennedy and Robert Kennedy did a test case in Greece on canceling elections. <snip>

She claimed that she had been injected with something. She died of cancer within the year.

5. Actually she died of the same bone cancer my mother did.
At the time there was no cure, however, it does make you wonder if a cancer could be injected into someone.

4. Martha got even: she invited selected friends to go shopping with her.
They maxed out John's credit cards, and the next day she filed for divorce and leaving him with the bill(s). I heard this from the daughter of one of the women who went shopping with Martha that night.

6. YES

After five men were arrested and four escaped, police said that "Other persons staying at the Watergate Hotel could use hotel rooms for listening posts to monitor conversations beamed by transmitters." John Mitchell lived at the Watergate Hotel. Could Martha have found men listening through the walls?

Ken Clawson, Deputy Director of Communications in the White House, was giving out interviews about Charles Colsen and Howard Hunt. Did he work with these men?

Robert Odle, the man who hired McCord for Security, was staff assistant with Communications in the White House.

Howard Hunt, CIA 21 years, worked with developing and guiding media operations.

James McCord did radio operation work for the FBI 3 years.

The importance of radio and communication control at the time of martial law and the cancellation of elections is described in Stephen Rousseau's Death of a Democracy, Greece and the American Conscience.

A coup d'etat was possible in Greece because all communication was limited to a few people. The regular sources were cut off, and taken by surprise.

7. My friend was convinced that Martha was Deepthroat
She made a good case for it. But, Martha's been dead for years and Woodward says he'll tell us when s/he dies so I guess it she wasn't it.

9. I wrote about Martha
on one of the last Plame Threads and the Plastic Ono Plame thread. She was a character. She did have some inside information, but nothing more than what others had told her .... and they were already talking to otrhers, too.

Martha was also rather paranoid, and drank a great deal. She had very serious medical problems well before Watergate. She was a sad, sad case.
