In Najaf, even the dead are suspected of carrying guns
(Filed: 24/08/2004)

American troops search coffins as a matter of routine at holy city's sprawling cemetery, reports Toby Harnden

For the Salman family, not even the battle raging in the holy city of Najaf could prevent them burying their dead yesterday at the Wadi al-Salam cemetery, the world's biggest necropolis and hallowed ground for Shia Muslims.

"Hurry up," he urged the Salmans. "The other day the Americans fired at a funeral group."

-snip-

Why were Soldiers who were going to be up for leave sent to Najaf?!

Imagine the Post Traumatic Stress that will be suffered by the Iraqis and American Soldiers!

1. Horrors upon horrors. Suffering everywhere, for everyone there.

Some say, "God Bless America."

I say, "God Bless THE WHOLE WORLD - no exceptions."

2. What??
"He ordered his translator to ask if any of the relatives were members of the Mahdi army"

And they expected an answer??

Oh yeah, a lifetime of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome for everyone.

3. Can someone tell me if they bury people with weapons there?
Is that in their culture or what?...

4. That's not what it's about. Security thinks arms are smuggled in.
To re-fuel the resistance.

5. I can tell that, but this is horrible, horrible PR.
It's positively ghoulish and I expect it to make the rounds of the Arab media extensively... is it really worth getting a few extra AK's and ammo belts for this kind of trouble?

6. I agree, it's the kind of story that will
make other nations more sympathetic to the Iraqis...and who can blame them!

Please try to understand
my son had buddies blown up trying to help a pregnant woman. In Lebanon, it used to be routine to booby trap dead bodies so that the survivors would also blow up once they came to claim their fallen loved ones.

This is War.

And it really sucks.
