Rest of us? Where is there news for us which is "in-debth?"

NPR/PBS is nothing but RW shill and not worth listening too..but Stewart is maybe not where we want to go..us over 25 somethings..over 35 somethings?

I really have problems getting real news from comedians...no offense..Stewart is great if I was back in College, or starting out on my own with no history on this earth.

They have forgotten us..the media. I guess it's because they know our Charge Cards and SS Benefits when we are eligible will be gone...so they gotta get the "newbies" to tune in to sell them stuff?

Don't get me wrong...about Stewart. I remember watching the earliest of Staturday Night Live...in it's "heydey" and my WWII Veteran Father-in-Law thought we were really strange...but it gave the "Liberal News at that time in Nixon's "lock down."

So...I understand..am not trashing him...but what's out there for the REST OF AMERICA?

Channel 366 on Direct TV - the only station to watch for news.

3. Now with Bill Moyers (PBS)
They tend to be very good -- even when Moyers has a left-leaning guest on, he interviews him from a Devil's Advocate perspective, so it's usually good stuff that makes you think about the issues from both sides.

I believe he's retiring after the election, though.

4. I'm 51
I never miss the Daily Show - I have withdrawal the weeks they're in repeats. Not that I depend on it fall all my news but it beats the local 10 o'clock shows.

6. I'm 49 and it is right up my alley.
Don't need corporatist propagandizers to explain reality to me.

He gets the news from CNN like we do, but he shines a satirical light on the lies, fabrications and inconsistencies it a brilliant way. I am so happy that he does it. He and Bill Maher effectively show the neo-cons and the whore media for what they are in a funny way.

Now for real news, you gotta just surf online. DU provides the links, which is one of the many things it is so great about it. Before DU I was spending more time with Google than my husband.

On edit: I also think that Jon Stewart gets a lot of his information from us here at DU as well. His range of topics seems to have expanded beyond CNN from when he first began.

7. I watch all the stuff you all have posted about. E-Mail me for Moyers VHS
tapes from his shows.

My point is that there's very little left of what there used to be for us folks over 35...they think we are tanking maybe...or they want YOUR CREDIT CARD DEPT to spill over onto us? Or, they want the "unsuspecting" to ramp it up so that we can pay for it all?

It's demographics and ramping the debt up for the unsuspecting, IMHO...
I haven't explained well where I'm coming from on this...but it's because I remember when Television news was geared to ALL AGE GROUPS...not so demographically dependent.

8. just watched the Daily Show (last nights rerun)
with my 76 year old mother. She was laughing her ass off. Most dangerous, she has emphesema. Normally I watch it with my 13 year old son. I'm somewhere in between their ages. We all enjoy it immensely.

Go figure.

I too enjoy Jon Stewart - but it's only on for less than half-an-hour, and only once a weekday. I crave some fresh news w/o comedy whenever I want it, and I guess this must be the place.

I have become somewhat cynical, even to the point of lurking here for months before I "signed up". I do my best to think for myself and filter out the extreme POV's - but the links and views, as I am sure you'll agree, are second to none. I stumbled onto Drudge Retort by accident believe it or not, and although the news items were interesting, some of the commentary threw me off, but that's just the nature I guess. Later on, I found DU.

I wish I had a more direct answer for you - the local shit is trash, and the National (broadcast) stuff lets me down too (I timed more commercials than news it seemed like). Sometimes we catch Deutsche Welle (spelling), BBC, or France 2 on one of the local independent stations.

I've even learned a lot about the print media here - surprising.

on edit - I turned my 75 Yr old mom on to Jon too - she loves him, and I'm on the younger side of the big five-o.

10. Welcome to DU! This place is the best, but "me bum" is spreading from
so much time here reading the "real news." Thanks for bringing up endless "Commerical time" trying to watch anything on the cables. By the time you've listened to high decibel music with rants you just want to tune the whole damned thing out. So, the real "content" is shouted out by the "commercial time."

Here, on DU one has a choice. But, there are times you want to sit with your partner and your animals for "quiet time" in front of the TV to listen to something interesting...or to run the vacuum machine with the sound turned up to the hinterlands, or be on the exercise bike or sprinting up the stairs...and there's nothing.

I guess I need that MP-3...thingy to replace my Walman so that I can listen to "Air America" all day.

But...my point is that it's all so difficult today to get REAL NEWS..whereas I remember a time when I didn't have to change my whole lifestyle to get "fair and balanced."

11. I'm 53 and I love the Daily Show
I never miss it. Often, Jon Stewart is the only one who is showing the falsity of the news; he does it in a particularly clear and appealing way.

I'm trying to compile a tape of great anti-Bush Daily Show segments to show at a house party.

12. My husband asked tonight "Why doesn't the real news media

show what Jon Stewart shows?" We were watching last night's show on TiVo, in which Jon shows SmearVet Elliott standing with Kerry and praising him in 1996, juxtaposed with his appearance in the ad. That should be shown by all journalists.

Next, he showed whoever the GOPer was who was trying to dismiss the SmearVet ties to Bush* as six degrees of Kevin Bacon, and then Jon demonstrated how to tie the SmearVets to Bush* in one degree. That's more of a commentary but it is a fair commentary. The guy defending Bush* brought up six degrees of Kevin Bacon but didn't check his degrees.

13. I'm 38 and I love the Daily Show--never miss it.
And now, my husband is hooked: muuuuuuuaaaaahaaahaaaa! He is going to tape some episodes for his friend at work who doesn't have cable.

If the media would do their job we wouldn't have to resort to a comedy show for news...but what alternate reality would that be?
