May Day, May Day !

<snip>
May Day, May Day. At first, it all seemed like just another lame internet joke:

The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day"… a day of celebration and reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2004, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance. I also call upon government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Loyalty Day.

Get it?

On May 1?

Yuk-yuk.

The purpose of the holiday, went the internet gag, was to "encourage citizens to demonstrate their commitment to our country by supporting our military, serving each other, and teaching our young people about our history and values."

Then came the punchline: It was real.

1. "I also call upon government officials to display the flag ...
... of the United States on all government buildings on Loyalty Day."

Isn't the flag generally displayed on (or near) all government buildings anyway? Just let them try to make this ancient holiday a neo-nazi "loyalty" fest. It will be a great opportunity, indeed, for teaching about history & values.

You want history? The pagans can "erect" Maypoles & bedeck everything with flowers. Beltane & the other cross-quarter days can be explained to all onlookers.

You want values? Unfurl the red banners. www.marxists.org/subject/mayday/index.htm

2. Hang on...
It looks like this law was enacted in 1958 (Eisenhower).

So let's just look at the difference between the language Clinton and Bush* used to commemorate the day.
What do we want first? let's do Bush*...

Loyalty Day, 2003
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation

To be an American is not a matter of blood or birth. Our citizens are bound by ideals that represent the hope of all mankind: that all men are created equal, endowed with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. On Loyalty Day, we reaffirm our allegiance to our country and resolve to uphold the vision of our Forefathers.

Our founding principles have endured, guiding our Nation toward progress and prosperity and allowing the United States to be a leader among nations of the world. Throughout our history, honorable men and women have demonstrated their loyalty to America by making remarkable sacrifices to preserve and protect these values.

Today, America's men and women in uniform are protecting our Nation, defending the peace of the world, and advancing the cause of liberty. The world has seen again the fine character of our Nation through our military as they fought to protect the innocent and liberate the oppressed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are honored by the service of foreign nationals in our Armed Services whose willingness to risk their lives for a country they cannot yet call their own is proof of the loyalty this country inspires. Their service and sacrifice are a testament to their love for America, and our soldiers' honor on and off the battlefield reaffirms our Nation's most deeply held beliefs: that every life counts, and that all humans have an unalienable right to live as free people.

These values must be imparted to each new generation. Our children need to know that our Nation is a force for good in the world, extending hope and freedom to others. By learning about America's history, achievements, ideas, and heroes, our young citizens will come to understand even more why freedom is worth protecting.

Last September, I announced several initiatives that will help improve students' knowledge of American history, increase their civic involvement, and deepen their love for our great country. The We the People initiative will encourage the teaching of American history and civic education by providing grants for curriculum development and training seminars. The Our Documents initiative will use the Internet to bring infor-mation about and the text of 100 of America's most important documents from the National Archives to classrooms and com-munities across the country. These initiatives are important, for it is only when our children have an understanding of our past that they will be able to lead the future.

This Loyalty Day, as we express allegiance to our Nation and its founding ideals, we resolve to ensure that the blessings of liberty endure and extend for generations to come.

The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day," and I ask all Americans to join me in this day of celebration and in reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2003, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance. I also call upon government officials to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on Loyalty Day.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-seventh.

GEORGE W. BUSH*

Now let's listen to Bill:

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

In his inaugural address, President John F. Kennedy said, "Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty." The members of our Armed Forces have long responded to such a call, though their task has often been difficult and fraught with peril. Drawing on an abiding devotion to country, America's service men and women have faced loneliness and danger, grave injury and death, to protect our Nation's interests and to reach out to others by providing humanitarian assistance.

In pausing to honor all those who have dedicated their lives to our freedom, let us reflect on their deep commitment to the fundamental ideals of independence, justice, and equality -- the very foundations of our way of life -- and draw inspiration from their shining example. For more than 200 years, America's shores have embraced immigrants seeking opportunity, while our system of government has encouraged people around the world who struggle against tyranny and oppression. Following the brave men and women who wear our Nation's uniform, let us each do our part to strengthen this legacy and to ensure that future generations will enjoy and cherish the precious liberties we hold so dear.

To nurture loyalty to and love of country, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." We spend this day in celebration of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, and we honor the extraordinary sacrifices made by the members of our Armed Forces throughout our Nation's proud history.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, WILLIAM J. CLINTON, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 1996, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. I also call upon government officials to display the flag on all government buildings and grounds.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of April, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and ninety-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twentieth.

WILLIAM J. CLINTON

3. May day, May day indeed!
Workers of the world unite.

Time is coming when there will be no other option if one wants a piece of the action, like fair pay for a fair day's work.

Loyalty day is offered up by both major parties as a distraction?

4. Nixon started "Loyalty Day" ...

...as a way of countering lefty anti-war protestors. May 1 was a big workers holiday in the former Soviet Union, and Nixon didn't want us protestors adopting the holiday here as a focus for protest marches.

Back in the 1960ws, I was in the Estonian girl scouts in NYC and they asked us to put on our blue uniforms and carry flags in the first Loyalty Day Parade. Unfortunately the majority of Estonian immigrants here are right-wing rethugs. My family was an exception.

As I was walking along the parade route with my fellow scouts, I was disgusted by the attitude and behavior of the other Esto-Americans - and the other marchers in general. They were jeering and cursing at peaceful protestors along the parade route, and one older guy ran to the curb and spat in the face of someone holding a peace sign.

That did it for me. I didn't know much about the Vietnam war, but I did know that peace was better than this jingoistic and hypocritical parading of "patriotism."

I slipped away from the parade, tossed out my little plastic flag and joined the antiwar movement.

If the Rethugs are trying to revive Loyalty Day, they're following in Tricky Dick's slimy footsteps.
