Blackwell backs off from strict enforcement of registration form weight
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell has backed off his position that state voter registration cards be printed only on heavy cardboard-like paper after it created confusion for some county election boards.
Blackwell spokesman Carlo LoParo said last night election boards should process all forms submitted. He said the boards should send the applicants a form on heavier-stock paper to return for a permanent record.
Election officials in some counties have been rejecting the lightweight forms and returning them with instructions to fill out and return the enclosed proper forms.
Other counties have been accepting all forms.
Sandusky County Elections Board Director Barbara Tuckerman says a 1971 federal law prohibits officials from denying people the right to vote because of mistakes involving a voting form.
