hey du:
so for most threads about polls, particularly internet polls, my response has been "ignore them, they're rigged." and i still believe that. between gallup, luntz, and the most recent tv polls oversampling rethugs and packing focus groups with undercover rethug operatives, and all the rest of the funky methodology, i think polls are just bunk.
that said: today we saw another victory for our side, and for the likes of DU, Kos and Atrios in particular. in a nutshell, i'm starting to believe in a couple of things that have shown me how we can truly make a difference.
it's no surprise to anyone here that most of the media is biased in bush's favor. of course they are, because in DC access is everything, and the shrub tolerates no disloyalty. so our media have been poodles since before day one. add to that the fact that most of the bobbleheads are paid millions (or at least way more than most of us) and benefit from the tax cuts shrub has bestowed upon them. so they back him up at every turn, fail to fact check every lie, and spin, spin, spin.
but DC is NOT the nation- not by a long shot. record turnouts for k/e rallies tell us just how many people are dying for the truth...literally in iraq, but that's another story...and that when the people are given a chance, most of them agree with most of what we talk about here. and most people are really unhappy with the direction this nation has been taken by shrubco.
but their voices haven't been heard in the "discourse" that is today's mass media. UNTIL THE DEBATES! that's right kids: by our rapid response in the first debate, and our complete thrashing of the rethug response team last night- we made a difference!
just look at all the news stories today. the mass media is talking hard and factually in a way we haven't seen since i can't even remember how long. sure, it's not everything we would like to hear, and there's still plenty of spin. but by showing up at media poll sites everywhere last night, even the bobbleheads cannot deny that there is a factual story to be told, and people are going to hear it.
the mainstream press is finally afraid, finally waking up to the fact that the "interweb thingy" is KICKING THEIR ASSES! no matter how much spin we see in the coming weeks, never forget that you have made real debate, real factual reporting, a key feature in this election again.
god bless you, howard dean. and god bless all of you out there who have shown the real power of the internet, and what we can do together.
kerry/edwards in a landslide!
