Good
Clear Channel lost big on this.

Hope other entertainers realize they don't have to put up with the fascists at CC

6. It is $500 million over five years! A half billion!
Can you believe it? It is outrageous,I think. I'm happy he got another contract, but $500 million? Too much! I feel the same way about sports figures, CEOs, and others who get such contracts.

2. Who owns Sirius?
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 05:11 PM by RatTerrier
And I'm sure the CC investment in XM, though relatively small, did influence his decision to go to Sirius.

I think it's a smart move. Howard's been doing the same thing for about 25 years, and I'm sure the Sirius deal will stimulate him with a new challenge.

Many ex-radio (terrestrial) people over there seem to love it. Alex Bennett on Sirius Left says it's the best radio job he's ever had (though he makes a fraction of what he used to make). And he's been doing radio for 40 years, including 60's Top 40, early 70's liberal radio, and two decades of comedy-based morning radio. That says a lot.

4. I hope this means Sirius will bring out more innovative hardware....
XM isn't that much better, but really.... we need the ultimate portable solution!

7. It's not just about Sirius vs. XM...
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 05:50 PM by deseo
... it's about Satellite vs Terrestrial radio.

Stern is making a bet that he can move a huge radio audience from terrestrial radio to satellite. He stated or hinted at these facts this morning:

1) his long-term goal is to steal a huge portion of the terrestrial radio audience. this will hurt CC, who has a big investment in TR.

2) he will be involved with setting up 3 channels. one will be his show, where he will now be able to say what he wants without FCC interference. believe me, he WILL get an audience.

3) he will change the business model of satellite radio. he suggested that even though his channels would not be "premium" channels (ie would not require payment of an extra fee), he did not rule out advertising. every dollar of ad he gets will essentially come out of the pockets of TR.

Like Stern or not, he is a savvy radio man and businessman. Making money does not seem to be his prime motivation, he had done well already, but shaking things up is. And he makes no bones about how much he hates CC and would like to stick it to them.

I wish him every success. One of the few risk factors I see is the prospect of the FCC trying to regulate content of pay radio. I think they will have a very hard time pulling this off, but no doubt they will try.

9. Sirius is playing games too: They are pre-empting AAR with sports games
In the last four weeks, they've picked AAR while leaving on America Right, to air the NCAA games. This past weekend they took AAR off to air football.

I am pissed and have contacted them because I bought XM initially until I found out they didn't include Randi in their lineup. I let them know that I believe their advertising is false and they really should be sued for not providing the shows they claim to.

It would be different if they didn't have other channels to pre-empt but they do. I find the timing so close to the election and the specific stations they choose to pre-empt to be highly suspicious.

I'm dropping Sirius after the one-year subscription requirement because their hardware stinks (I've had three antenna wires to break) and because they cost more and require a one year minimum subscription. Screw Sirius.

10. Well the pukes are complaining about Vote for Change
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 06:38 PM by Wheaty
SIRIUS is running the entire Vote For Change four-hour concert from Washington, DC. Live

And also running up to it they'll do three full days of the very same musicians performing on the “Vote For Change Tour” will sit in as SIRIUS DJs!

If you asks me Sirius leans more left on the whole than XM, but tries to be non partisan. Maybe they are overcompensating with the sports preemptions.

I have both Sirius and XM and on the whole I prefer Sirius.
