one question: In the text under the link it also suggests it could be a medical device.

Does anyone know what type of medical device would be placed on someone's back? and for what type of condition?

5. Just an answer to your question, not a speculation
on this particular subject ... but people with back problems sometimes have nerve blockers installed that send interference messages down nerve channels to alleviate pain without opiates or other painkillers. I've never used one, so I don't know what the 'kit' looks like that's on your back, but I think there's a wiring harness that goes with the probes and a pocket-sized controller that sets the amount of power that's sent to the nerves. Anything that's too much probably causes twitching; too little, and you hurt. From what I've read, the most common use is for pinched nerves, sciatica and ruptured/damaged spinal discs.
