Okay, I laughed in some of it but overall this is a Freepers wet dream. They poke fun at liberals BIG TIME!!!Nothing against ANY rightwingers, ONLY LIBERALS!!! Liberals are the butt of the joke & are even the villians in this.Oh, & all the liberals Die a horrific death in this. TOTALLY bias! I mean, c'mon. How can they NOT have Bush puppet? I mean, he so much a charachter that needs to be mocked. This film was very mean spirited IMO. My firned said I didn't get it. That it was an extreme right wing edge to it & that was the joke. Well, I didn't get that when I saw it. TRUST ME, Freepers will call this film their own & Trey Parker & Matt Stone have sold out BIG TIME!

in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

I always figured if my hubby's Freeperish bigot family liked the show (edit - South Park, that is) as much as they do, it wasn't anything I wanted to subject myself to. Ditto the movie.

The only right-wing thing I ever saw them make fun of was evangelical religion, and not even all evangelicals are Republicans. I literally got through eleven minutes of one 'South Park' episode and decided I didn't need that. Anybody who can fool themselves Parker & Stone were ever 'even-handed' is rationalizing.

21. ..and here it is.
Parker and Stone have not only gone after evangelicals: they've also gone after the military, people easily offended by mass media, Mormons and a slew of others. The movie was also pretty much all about excoriating paranoia and finger-pointing at other nations. Apparently, you don't watch the show enough to realize that Parker and Stone pretty much go after everyone.

For God's sake, people need to build up some constitution around here.

26. I hadn't watched much South Park
but I saw a show recently - that must have been made a couple months after 9/11 and I thought it seemed fairly balanced until the end - when I was like :wtf:

I thought it took a big turn to the right.

So I'm not surprised.

I also think a lot of these supposed "satires" that make all politicians look like equal liars does NOT help our case - when we have the current administration to depose. They seem more likely to get people to say - "well the hell with it" and not vote.

I believe it is a Republican tactic - smearing politicians - to suppress the vote.

But I also believe that people should give stronger weight to what politicians have actually done in the past than what they promise when they are running.

4. It was a sneak preview last night
The audience was filled with mostly kids but they loved watching Michael Moore blow up an American secret base. They LOVED watching Janeane Garogffalo's head get blown up. They loved watching Susan Sarandon get killed & Tim Robbins catch fire. I kept saying why don't they have Ann COulter or some Right wing celebrity in it? Sean Penn & Alec Baldwin are the ones who "Hate America" & are the villians in this along with the North Korean leader. I was angry. I mean, I can take a little good ribbing, but c'mon, lets be fair! I loved the South Park movie because they attacked both sides equally. This is a campaign commerical for George Bush!

but I'll venture this: maybe there aren't any repub "celebrities" worth the gunpowder it would take to blow them up. I tend to think an exploding Ann Coulter would elicit much head scratching and cricket noises in a theatre full of kids.

8. Haven't Seen It But It Makes Fun of Both Sides From What I've Heard
It paints the war on terror as some sort of macho action movie parody. In an attempt to "save" cities from terrorists they end up blowing them up anyway. I'll probably end up seeing it just to see what the fuss is about. I enjoy South Park so I'll probably like it.

37. posted in the other "sean penn" thread but...
One form of satire is to take something to a ludicrous extreme with no indication of mockery, as in the essay "A Modest Proposal."

One could easily imagine this parody of Thunderbirds as rightwing children's propaganda, and I'm imagining that's the tack they're taking.

...but I haven't seen it. I'm looking forward to it. If lots of people get mad, you know a nerve has been touched.

I read that they had Bush/Kerry puppets created, but decided not to use them.

Only one side. Its VERY clear that the liberals are the butt of the joke. NOT ONE dig at the Repubs, ZERO! NONE! Thats what pissed me off. I kept waiting for their turn, & it never came. I tried looking at it from a point of view that it was satire & all, but didn't walk away from the movie with that. Neither did the audience. Heard alot of bashing of movie stars & Hollywood & how they should all just shut up! Sad thing is, this could have been better if it were more fair. I hope Stone & Parker makes alot of enemies from this. All & all I am sure it will do VERY WELL!

23. Not as blatant for sure.. but there were a few digs in there
"We had bad intelligence" and the computer replies, "I'm sorry".

As the TA plans are going down.. "WE HAVE NO INTELLIGENCE, I REPEAT WE HAVE NO INTELLIGENCE".

and of course TA doing MORE damage than any of the terrorists was quite obvious....

However, when the Eiffel Tower fell into the Arch de Triumph and there was a round of applause from the audience... I had a flashback to seeing the cheering Muslim's over the WTC....

Sad, that we've sunk to the same depths as terrorists.

My biggest problem with Trey & Matt over the years even with S'Park is their over-simplistic approach to complex social issues and usually told from the '5th grade comprehension level' at best.

The irony in the whole TA movie is that we HAVE NO TROOPS available to FIGHT NORTH KOREA should that become necessary because they're trapped in IRAQ!!!!!

38. isn't the idea of...
"Team America: World Police" pretty much a joke on Bush's concept of controlling the rest of the world in general?

People have said the idea is they go into save cities but end up blithely destroying them in the process, kind of as this administration has done in Iraq if we are to believe to "we are there to spread peace" message they're currently peddling.

If the right wing slant gets the freeps in there and subliminally plants a message that war is ridiculous and bad, then more power to them.

and libertarianism may have a couple good points, but it is mostly the wild west. In fact, many of our current problems have their roots in libertarianism since libertarians were largely behind tha law and economics movement which helped concentrate wealth in this nation via doing away with regulations that kept power in check.

on one level or another. Parker & Stone do this. I don't know that it's right to say they've "sold out," because I never thought of them as liberal artists. South Park often expresses a liberal critique of conservative values, satirically masked. But also, vice versa.

If freepers champion "Team America's World Police," then they just don't get satire.

93. No. It's a brilliant a marketing plan. Liberals are hip enough to "get"
satire and confident enough in their politics to laugh at their own excesses.

Freepers ain't.

So a movie that appears on the surface to celebrate freeptitude but that's actually satirizing the hell out of it markets better than almost any other form of satire.

Simply put, they can appreciate the film like little kids. We can appreciate it like adults. Of course, I haven't seen it yet, but that's how South Park is, at least in general.

32. Here's what they have said...crappy messages
What it isn't, the pair insist, is an attack on Bush and the Republicans.

"It has a lot of messages, but the overall message is really just one of optimism, 'cause when you laugh at s- - - you're just inherently saying, 'People, it's not as f- - -ing dire as you're all making it out to be," Parker says. "That's our point."

We should make a little PSA : 'Please, if you're the kind of person who's going to change your vote based on seeing our movie or seeing Michael Moore's movie, you should not be voting. Please don't vote. Thank you very much.' "

http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/30964.htm

If you don't know what you're talking about, there's no shame in not voting," Stone says finally. "They say if you don't vote, you can't bitch. But you can bitch all you want. This is America."

South Park is nothing but ugliness and cynicism taken to the 9th degree. The fact that it is funny doesn't make it less amoral.

Which kid always dies? The poor kid, whose house is full of rats as a comedy device.

Gays are constantsly made out to be disgusting perverts, fisting, etc.

I hate a lot of what south park represents, in spite of the fact that its' often very funny.

Episode: "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride".

Big Gay Al is cringingly flamboyant, but the message of the episode is that Stan rejects his dog for being gay because he is afraid of being made fun of, then ultimately decides it doesn't matter and he loves his dog no matter what he is.

40. Irrelevant. The characters are always presented as an unappealing "other"
Problem is, most gays, being fairly "normal" in their everyday lives, wouldn't make great comedy fodder, so they take ugly gay stereotypes to the extreme.

I doubt they have a problem with gays, but their show, like eminem, sends the wrong message to stupid people who take it at face value.

42. Whatever...
There are normal gay people and there are ones who act like those portrayed on South Park. The ultimate message is one of tolerance. They make fun of Cartman for being fat, and they do it because he's vicious, but he's still their friend.

71. I've known more than a few gay men living in SF.
And I've yet to meet ANYONE that rresembles big gay Al.

There are masculine, feminine, just regular guy types, but none who act or dress in such a caricaturish way. Al even looks kinda dirty

74. Not all gay men live in SF, you know
I happen to know a man who's a dead ringer for Big Gay Al and he just so happens to be the bartender at Scot's, the gay bar I hang at. Right down to the bright Hawaiian shirts and scarf. I also know a drag queen who could give Big Gay Al a run for his money when in comes to flamboyant behavior. Is it possible that Chicago's gay community has become more theatrical than San Francisco's? Or perhaps it's just possible that your acquaintance does not necessarily represent the entire spectrum of the gay community?

I think you completely missed the point of Big Gay and of the gay characters in South Park. Big Gay Al is the only character in South Park who is completely happy. He leads a fabulous life and helps alienated gay animals, particularly Stan's dog (voiced by George Clooney, no less, so I suppose you're going to have to hate him now too, seeing as he is friends with Stone and Parker).

The miserable and perverted characters are those who are closeted and untrue to themselves (and others) like Mr. Garrison. Most of my gay friends adore South Park and have no problems with Parker and Stone, as they preach acceptance and tolerance in a way that actually might get through to straight teenagers. It is a cartoon, after all.

75. I fail to see how they teach "acceptance or tolerance"
I watch the show on and off, and I admit it's funny, but I don't think it teaches ANYTHING.

I also don't thing stereotypes like Al would be harmful if most people had a decent education and upbringing, but there are a lot of angry young punks our there looking for someone to feel superior to, and seeing characters like Al, or even moreso, "Slave" (the one getting fisted all the time) reinforce their prejudices, giving them an excuse in their own mid to act out in an ugly way in real life whould they ever meet a real gay person, or someone they perceive as one.

Since you're gay, I won't presume to lecture you about this, especially since it puts ME in the position of being the PC one (which I never thought would happen)

I don't hate the characters at all. I just worry how some miscreants would view them. Also, isn't Mr. Garrison "out", now?

I don't hate Clooney either, but why should I like Parker and Stone? Everything I've seen implies that they fall in the range between extreme libertarian and republican greedhead. Their humor, while well-done, is often cynical and mean-spirited.

But I guess it's a matter of taste, too. I prefer South Park over that horrible "Shorties" show, or "Reno 911".

85. Perhaps I haven't been keeping up with SP...
and I know they run the gamut of everything that could possibly be offensive, but I haven't noticed any major plot points about "fisting". I don't doubt they've used it, but you've mentioned it twice. You also know about the character Mr. Slave, so I'm wondering if you've just happened to catch one episode where that character was featured prominently...he's a relatively recent addition.

If "angry young punks" are watching South Park, they're seeing that gay (and often eccentric) characters are part of the community and no more crazy or worthy of ridicule than anyone else in that town.

Judging from my previous opinion and this newest offering I must conclude that they are simply amoral and proud of their ignorance, not really an acceptable position in these strange and terrible times.

The daily show is about the only people who do it well these days. John knows how to go after both sides in a way that still shows you he and his staff have a clue what is going on in the world. The SP guys just latch on to whatever MEME is out for LCD cheap laughs.

Potty humor is what they are about mostly.

I believe that was the "getting gay with kids" episode. It's just a joke people. That one had my side hurting, as most of them do.

Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 08:34 AM by EV1Ltimm
My sarcasm-meter is on the fritz.

This is another one of those "I haven't seen it yet, but..." posts.

I would think that since the heroes of the film are driving around in a flag-wrapped H2, it would be an obvious attack on the right.

Maybe liberals are considered "traitors" in this movie as an over-the-top generalization that has been plaguing the right. Of course "every liberal wiped off the face of the earth" has been a recurring theme that I hear from right-wingers on a consistent basis.

And Parker himself even said that he hates actors and we really shouldn't care what they have to say about anything, so seeing them getting blown up really isn't as anti-liberal as it is anti-hollywood.

Staking-out Muslim terrorists in France? Blowing up Middle-Eastern landmarks? And Kim Jong Il, the guy Bush is ignoring, is the main bad guy? I could just be blowing smoke, but there's just too much I've heard about this film to think it's a right-wing puff piece.

I think "Falling Down" is more of a freeper's wet dream.

edit: my grammar am bad

And besides, I scoff derisively at Libertarianism. It is a joke of a philosophy for people who cannot handle the reality that life is complex and there is no single simple principle that can be effectively applied to everything.

61. I also saw TA Saturday night
Since nobody's really jumping to the film's defence, I'll point out there was no Kerry puppet in the film, either.

I'm a long-time liberal. I saw nothing in that film intended to provoke any action other than laughter at liberal celebs (as Jon Stewart said last week, "You don't get to pick if you're the voice of a generation") or subtle outrage at America's continuing cowboy diplomacy.

In my defense, I'm a big Thunderbirds fan from my little kid days (it was new when I was little).

The film was flat funny. If it makes freepers laugh, then maybe some of them will get the overall theme, which is to question why America feels the necessity to police the world in the first place.

In the film I watched, Kim Jong Il was the villain, and the liberal icons were easily duped by their self-importance into serving KJI's purpose.

By the way, Matt and Trey sold out years ago openly. Now they get to do projects that interest them. Paramount took a huge chance (since the non-South Park movies have had sucky box office).

It was the funniest film I've seen in quite a while.

We have to take our own 9/11 rule...don't bash unless you've seen it.

Parker and Stone portray nearly EVERYONE as idiots. If you move your thinking up a layer, perhaps this film is an ironic idea of what the freeps would feed their children if allowed to make a puppet show?

Remember that the essay "A Modest Proposal" which was about solving hunger by suggesting people cook and eat children also had no internal indication that it was satire.

Haven't seen it, but I can't wait.

Trey and Matt usually run right down the middle of the road. They piss off everyone in most cases.

I remember the episode of South Park where they were protesting the war....all the conservative war hawks were redneck country music-singing assholes. The liberals were "tree-hugging hippy pieces of crap", to quote Eric Cartman.

They had one on immigration and outsourcing that showed the liberal point of view in the end. You can never tell with those two. I always know they're going to make me laugh, though.

Laughing is good for you, and so is knowing when to take some constructive criticism when your point of view is a little...over the top. I think that's why the Daily Show is so successful. They point out the absurdity in everything.

That doesn't sound equal.

These guys are right wing supporters and have been for years - they are getting worse and more blatant because they are afraid of offending the right wing but not afraid of offending the left.

I haven't seen the movie. If they blow up a bunch of liberal puppets, and the Ann Coulters of the world start saying "yeah!", and some other people say "yeah" after they listen to her, at least I know the people who are fairly stupid for what they are. Plus, nobody reasonable really wants to blow up liberals.

While I'm not a regular South Park watcher, I thought the SP movie was one of the funniest things I'd ever seen, and if anything it was slanted way left. Remember the war in the South Park movie? 76. Horrific Labor Practices at South Park
As someone who used to work there, it is truly one of the worst animation studios in the country.

Their standard work contract is for 70 hour weeks before they pay overtime. They will regularly hire people, work them 6-8 weeks at 70 hours/week, then lay them off for four weeks before hiring them back.

They have tried to bust unionization on the production many times, including firing people who were trying to organize.

I have other stories, including those of sexual harrassment.

South Park is fun to watch, not fun at all to make.

As far as I can tell, it is more of a stab at self-righteous hollywood types (the self-righteous ones all turn out to be liberal), rather than liberals or progressives in general. I will definitely see this movie and remember to bring my sense of humor. Alex Baldwin tends to make me want to barf with his self-righteousness in any case, and I'm afraid Michael Moore has always been a standout example to me of why people should finish their college education rather than drop out in the middle. They won't be missed. ;-)
