Encountered a freeper lady at the supermarket in SAN FRANCISCO today.
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 12:31 PM by UdoKier
I was wearing my K/E button at the checkout line at the Cala Market on 5th ave. and Geary, and the lady cashier seeing it said. "Oh, I should have worn my BUSH BUTTON today!"

Me: Huh?

Freepette: Your button. I shoulda worn my Bush button.

Me: Do you think it's a good idea to wear a partisan button to work? I don't wear mine to work.

Freepette: Well, I don't wear one here because I'd get massacred, San Francisco and all.

Me: Um, okay.

Freepette: That's why I wear this pin of the cross on the American flag.

Me: (Inside my head -"If you love Jesus' teachings and America, it would make more sense to support Kerry.)" - but not wanting to start a laborious debate in the checkout line I said:
"Good luck with that."

and with a subtle roll of the eyes, I walked away.

Luckily, this nutcase's vote won't count for a thing, but I thought it funny that she had to make a point of telling a customer how she disagreed with his button. Every other car here has a K/E sticker or NO WAR on it. Why do people like that chooose to live here? It really puzzles me. Aren't they afraid that the "liberal" or the "gay" might rub off on them?

2. Should've told her
that putting any symbol or text on the US flag was defacing it.

3. Honestly, I seldom go to this market.
I hate it. Not that it's especially freeperish, but they have the highest prices, and the bagger there is ALWAYS CONSTANTLY SINGING and telling horrible "jokes" and doing really lame impressions while he bags. It's like having a really really pale imitation of Rich Little doing your groceries. He really works my nerves with his non-stop patter.

5. Phobia?
"Freepette: Well, I don't wear one here because I'd get massacred, San Francisco and all."

What? How many people with Bush buttons are desceded upon there each day? What do you do with the tangled, bloody remains? I suspect she was not using hyperbole there? ;)

That's either overly phobic or a projection of intent.

7. Exactly. I see Bush stickers on occasion, and just roll the eyes.
It's sad to see ignorance, but in general, WE are not the ones who go around beating up those who disagree with us.

6. It's not a good idea to bother your customers
I have people occasionally try to engage me in political conversations and if I can surmise that their views are totally different from mine, I am politely non-commital. This woman needs to learn about boundaries.

8. I wasn't offended because she wasn't confrontational about it.
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 12:45 PM by UdoKier
I suppose I could've complained about her, tried to get her disciplined or whatever, but that's how THEY do things.

The UNION she belongs to saved her health benefits and pay a couple of months back, and Bushco is doing everything it can to bust unions, but hey, whatever. BUSH IS A CHRISTIAN.

9. Well, plenty of DUers live in heavily pro-Bush areas.

I would guess family ties, job considerations, and maybe just a natural tendency toward being ornery are some factors explaining why people live in areas that don't reflect their politics. :)

10. 5th and Geary huh? Maybe I'll bring my Kerry button on Monday
and go over there for lunchtime. Can you give a description w/o being to obvious? If she doesn't say anything I'll end it with,"I noticed your cross on the American flag pin, good luck with that."

11. The pin is on her apron.
She was maybe in her 30s, brunette curly hair - I think.

Don't remember her face, but she was white - of course.

If you meet her, please be nice to her. She was not rude or anything.

15. Be nice? Of course, I'm a liberal, that's what we do!
I think "The pin is on her apron" should be the official DU greeting to determine if you've come across another DUer though! It's so "undergroundy".

The next time you're inline somewhere, just mutter "The pin is on her apron" and see if anyone responds. Now what should the response be........AHA! Of course, I got it. You say "The pin is on her apron" and any DUers should respond back, "Good luck with that!".

12. yeah
For about 6 months after 9/11, the Bell Market on 24th Street had big displays of the grotesque "These colors don't run" t-shirts at the checkout counters. Aren't they owned by the same people? Maybe she works for a freeper boss.

13. Might want to mention to the management that they have workers
subjecting customers to politics at the check stand. I wouldn't tolerate it at my business for either candidate.

14. Takes a LOT to get me to complain to a manager.
I respect working people too much to do that unless its really over the top. I did mention that being partisan at worrk is not appropriate, so I think that's enough.

If she does it a lot, it will backfire on her eventually.

The mountains of North Carolina are a nicce respite from the flatness and heat....

...St.Petersburg.
Lot of old folks here, who remember all the damage that Repugs have done in the past....Plus the fact that The St.Petersburg Times is one of the most Liberal Newspapers in the country. (They love Bashing Bush..Heh..Heh..)
If I would have had to go to Jacksonville (hicksville) I probably would have quit my job....

St.Pete is OK though....:)
