12. they project remember?
I'll bet they were worried about how Bush's skin color would look during the debate--so they deflected the issue onto Kerry before the debate so people would be looking at him instead of Bush.

I honestly wondered what they were talking about when I saw Kerry and thought he looked no different. And I do remember thinking that Bush looked more orange than Kerry did during that second debate. Dang these guys are good at lying.

9. This is a joke question, right?
Colors shift according to film stock and processing, not to mention whatever monitor you happened to be using to view the photo.

The wrinkles on the other hand, those are real....

13. I've actually used that rub-on tan stuff before, you can get it at
any drug store. Several different brands available. It looks just like this.

... a hundred times (ok, maybe twice :) ) and lots of folks refuse to get it.

Color balance of a normal film photo is basically decided by the processor. They don't always get it right.

Once the photo is in the digital realm (which it has to be to be published anywhere), it is trivial (I can do it in 20 seconds) to change the overall hues.

If you see Bush* in person, you can evaluate his skin tone. Any other method is meaningless.

21. Almost no photojournalist shoots film any longer.
It's too slow to get it processed, and it just ends up getting digitized to publish, anyway.

My first thought was a gray balance issue, but the colors on the jackets and pants in the background look true, plus there's the problem of the other person who looks normal. Still, I have a hard time believing he is that color and no one has started whispering about it. I just can't figure out what, from a photography standpoint, could cause him to come out looking like that when everything else looks normal.

24. Not all colors are equal
It's not unusual for some shades or colors to shift more radically than others. So you can indeed have many true colors and then some weird shift for a section of an image that has a different mix. In my experience greens and yellows tend to shift more unpredictably than blues and reds, for instance.

The point is that you can't make any definitive statement about Bush's complexion based on one photo.

26. High contrast effects
The supposedly normal skin tones in the hand are actually a bit blown out while Bush's image is much more saturated. I'd guess the photo was shot in less than ideal conditions and came out a bit flat, so someone probably bumped up the contrast to give it a more dramatic boost. That probably skewed the balance of skin tones, pushing Bush darker and more yellow than normal.
