I just got back from 2 hours of door to door canvassing.....
and 2 hours of dropping off flyers at doors. The last two hours were in the rain (it is Oregon after all!) but the headquarters was jammed with volunteers and spirits were high. I ran across some Repub people dropping off flyers-they didn't want to get too close to me and walked on the other side of the street. What do you think they're afraid of?

5. bush supporters seem to be afraid of everything
liberals, dissenting opinion, boogey-men, wolves, our own freedoms, anyone not sporting a "W" button or sticker, dark-skinned people, poor people, the list is long. I am afraid of only one thing: fascist, neocon, theocrats that want to tinker with the constitution and bill of rights. Oh, and spontaneous human combustion. Two things.

8. transition
When Republican volunteers are being quiet and avoiding Dems, that can be a good sign. It can be because of a decreasing certainty on their part about the Republican propaganda.

I think that as a result of the aggressive and outspoken activism of liberals and progressives this year a lot of people who up 'til now believed in the elaborate network of fabrications needed in order for them to be able to support the Bush adminstration are being exposed to some new information. Taking in the new information is jarring for them because it is incompatible with their mental framework. This can be very confusing, because their entire world view is resting on a set of assumptions that are not holding together for them very well. This shouldn't surprise us, since the propaganda from the right wing carries within it so many illogical constructs and self-contradictory ideas.

As the armor begins to crack for these people, their first response may be silence and introspection as they try to sort through the mess that Hannity et al have made of their thinking. Some of these people may still be going through the motions as they work through it. Perhaps all of their friends and family are Bush supporters, and perhaps they are keeping a previous committment to canvas, and they are not ready yet to make a clean break from the pack.

I think that if we expect to turn things around we should recognize that this will require a lot of change on the part of Bush supporters, and it is important that we watch for signs of this introspective and quiet transition process and give them "room" to change without a lot of pressure or ridicule from us.

10. i admire canvassers
it's hard work. it's hard, hard work. hard, like wood. not soft wood, hard, hard wood. like the kind canvssers knock on day after day :)

i canvassed for sierra club for a few days. i couldn't stand banging on people's doors to try and sell them membership to the sierra club. i kept improvising the script, and i missed quota by like a hundred dollars both days.

i crossed salesman off my list of jobs i could try :)

thanks for doing it though, we need more of ya.

11. yeppers
we did about three (hours) today, downtown, where we got mainly businesses and empty buildings...... it sucked, but it had to be done.

we actually ran into other canvassers for kerry/edwards, i guess out working independently, since there was some kind of festival in the same precinct.

and then, we went back to headquarters, and stood outside holding signs with others for a couple more hours..... basically a repeat of last week, 'cept we worked the suburbs a little then.

our headquarters is on the busiest road in the state, about 50-60,000 people on a typical saturday. lotta eyes checkin' those signs
