Your darkest political secret...`
Edited on Wed Oct-27-04 11:06 PM by Gaffey Duck
In 2000 and 2001, I was a member of the Canadian Alliance.

:puke:

If it makes y'all feel any better though, I was still 110% for Gore.

(now covering head to protect from brickbats). I loved Jimmy Carter but was disappointed in his Presidency. Registered Repub to vote for Howard Baker in FL primary. Remember clearly voting in Nov '80 - left office late - parked at Tony's Deli down from polling place - took everything out of purse but wallet w/voter card and keys - replaced with a beer and half a Cuban (from the famous Tony's) 'cause I was hungry - stood in line and drank the beer and ate the Cuban. That's my excuse. Went home and watched "Dr. Strangelove" on the teevee.

I never once listened to shrub and his cabal until Powell appeared before the UN and laid out this detailed speech including a slide show showing what a threat Iraq was to us. I took him at his word until 2 weeks into the war and no WMD's were found, only excuses. I knew then we were duped.

I campaigned for Nixon, and staffed his HQ on Fourth street, San Rafael CA, the same year American Graffitti was filmed on this very same street. 47. Well, I've posted it here on other threads,
but I guess it's worth repeating. The "R" next to Allen's name stands for racist. He has a particular love of the Confederacy and a deeply rooted, well-documented hatred of blacks going back to when I knew him as a high school senior in Palos Verdes, CA in 1970.

He was quarterback of our varsity team, and well known because his father was coach of the LA Rams at the time. Palos Verdes is a very well-to-do Southern California suburb, heavily repuke. Back then the high school was virtually 100% white. However, our teams frequently played teams from nearby communities that were more racially diverse, and sometimes predominently black.

Though he was born and raised in Southern California, George Allen took a great interest in the Confederacy. He had confederate flag bumper stickers on the car he drove to school, and made no secret of his animosity toward blacks. One Monday, the week we were scheduled to play Morningside High School, a nearby black school, some very racist graffiti showed up on the walls of our school. It was anti-white and menacing, on first impression the work of Morningside kids vandalizing our campus in a very ugly racially-charged way.

I'm not sure how he was found out, but within hours George Allen was fingered as the culprit. He had vandalized his own school in an effort to stir up racial hatred. Because of who his father was, he got off with a slap on the wrist and a public apology over the PA.
I've never forgotten, though, and neither have our classmates -- some of whom tried unsuccessfully to interest the Virginia media in this during his various campaigns. In 2000 I contacted his opponent, Chuck Robb's campaign manager, and he seemed pretty interested but never followed up.

So, another dimwitted idiot named George has gone pretty far by trading on his father's name. I read one time that he had a noose and huge Confederate flag in his home and, when asked, claimed that he was merely a student of Confederate History. Anyhow, given his history, I think he's gone about as far as he can hope to in politics, which is way farther than he deserves to.

I temporarily changed to a Republican for a local primary election.

Yes shamed as I am to admit it, a good friend of mine's father was running on the Republican ticket against several others for a council seat and several of us did it so we could vote for him. He was a moderate Repub and we wanted to help.

I changed back not long after that. Couldn't stand the thought of sayin I was a Republican. Makes me cringe now just thinking about it. All I can say is that I was young and stupid.

I voted for Frank Keating in Oklahoma in 94. I even made some phone calls for his campaign. It was a "protest vote", of sorts, and one I based on faulty information. Once I realized the error of what I'd done and what a piece of crap he was, it was too late to be removed from the Keatings' mailing list- I got invitations for every damn barbecue they had, his birthday parties, etc. (barf), and they sent me a Christmas card every year. Boy do I hope he's retired from politics!

I grew up in a Republican family, so I didn't know any better. (My God, that was **40** years ago!)

Anyway, I wised up the following year, and began to let my inner liberal out. The next time I worked for a candidate, it was Democrat Eugene McCarthy in 1967-68.

Since there was no vote for 18-year-olds back then, I had to wait until 1972 to cast my first presidential vote for George McGovern.

58. goldwater in 1964, in your heart you know he's right.......
My political activism dawned in the 7th grade, 1960, nixon/kennedy.

Went down to the local republican headquarters and got my first campaign job riding around on my bicycle in a little north Texas town and putting nixon signs on telephone poles. And removing an occuasional kennedy sign.

Goldwater in 1964. Had a driver's liscense by then and ended up running the republican office after school, answer the phone and pass out bumper stickers and buttons. Poppy was also running for senator in 1964.

The evenings were spent with my republican youth league recruits putting up goldwater and bush signs on telephone poles. And removing an occuasional lbj sign. Boy scout training, sneaking around 101, came in handy. The staple gun was also invented around this time.

Nothing worked, the democrats won everything by a landslide. But mrbill was young and stupid.

Brain began to get new software in august 1968. Watched the chicago riots on tv at the frat house and a few weeks was denied entry to a nixon rally on the campus. Something about my hair being over the collar of my nice sport coat and tie. The mccarthy button might have been a problem.

Things went downhill from there, went to europe, read che's books, moved to boston, got chased by a policeman with a big stick with my name on it, smelled tear gas. Got chased by the draft, a scarier monster than al-quida........

Mcgovern in 1972.

56. I was briefly a Libertarian
I didn't vote in 2000. At the time, I would've voted for Gore if I voted absentee in Missouri or for Nader if I voted in New York (was in college at the time). I'm not really sure to this day why I didn't.

After 9/11, I started to realize what an ass * was and started paying more attention to politics. Somehow I ended up at the Libertarian Party website, and their socially liberal stances sucked me in, and I didn't see through the lies about their extreme economic conservatism. I just agreed with them that it was ridiculous to spend $270 billion/year on defense. During the 2002 midterms, I voted pretty solidly Libertarian.

Eventually (being someone who's too poor to owe any taxes), I realized that tax cuts only help those who make enough to have a tax burden in the first place, and they help the uber-rich far more than the middle class. It didn't take long before I was a Democrat...and I'm here to stay!

60. I used to be a College Republican!
Yep, I was even the secretary. I never did feel like I fit in, I was just mimicing my parent's political views, not thinking for myself.

61. This is the first election I'm supporting a democrat for President
In 1988, as a five year old, I voted for Bush because his name seemed less silly than Dukakis.

In 1992 I supported Perot because he was amusing.

In 1996 and 2000 I supported Ralph Nader because I felt like listening to my conscience and I used to agree with that son of a bitch.
