2. I think I read it's about %2.5 of all phone users
Have no land line. I don't think it's that big of a deal this election. This will become more of a factor each election cycle though.

3. 3-10%
industry stats from 2003, 3%. but that's old research and changing quickly. i've heard estimates anywhere from 5-7% and even up to 10%. then take into consideration people who are PRIMARY cell phone users who don't answer their landlines unless they know who it is via caller ID, and you've got another sizeable bunch that don't get polled.

I'd bet on at least 10% that are now unreachable by pollsters via telephone.

Big question is how different that 10% is vs. the other 90%. Not many stats on that yet.

We'll probably know on 11/2 though!

4. Here's an article that at least attempts to approach this:
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 10:12 AM by nownow
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6237699/

They give the ratio, if not raw numbers. I quick look at the 2000 census figures would probably give you a good idea, though.

On edit -- I saw a figure in an article of approximately eight million, but the post is long in the archives and I didn't see the article in the main Google search I did. Not sure how that compares with the percentages offered in the MSNBC article up there.

5. 'Pollsters can't survey cell phone-only users' - CNN article
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/10/15/polls.cellphones.ap/

About 5 percent of all households receive telephone service only by cellular phone, according to a face-to-face survey done earlier this year by the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Among young adults up to age 24, the number is close to three times as high.

7. We have a land line, but it's only for our alarm system....
....emergencies, and guests. We never, ever answer it.

My wife and I are near 100% cel phone users.

I only have a cell. Id like to get a land line for emergencies, but right now I have to cut costs as I recently went back to school and thus, have less money...

15. There are 170,000,000 cell phones in America
That is literally half the population. How many have landlines as well is a good question. We do know that none of the cell phones get polled.

16. On a similar note
Where do those of us who have a VoIP line count? I've been using VoIP for about 6 months now and dropped my landline the week after I started with Vonage. VoIPer's aren't 'traditional' phone users and as far as I know our numbers aren't publicly available. I imagine the overall percentage of VoIP users is well below cell users and is, statistically, a moot point.

The land line in my place is really my GF's, so my main phone remains a cell. Works for me.

22. regardless; polling only gets those at home
shut ins, oldsters, stay at home moms.

no one has EVER polled us; we're gone by 7:30, home at 6. often out again by 8, and when we are home, if caller ID doesn't say its someone we know, we don't pick up during dinner. telemarketers, you know.

fuck polls.

24. I have a land line, but never answer it
At all. Unless its someone whose number I recognize, I just don't deal with it.

Although, one time the ID showed a number registered to "something"PAC, so I answered it in hopes that it would be a survey. But it was some bullshit about satellite TV.

25. I read it's about 18% of the population (they're not all voters, though,
I imagine). The population of America, that is.

I read that in a news article by someone opining about polls.

and both use cells exclusively, as do their friends. And they're voting this year. For Kerry. Don't know how many thousands more like them. But they're not being accounted for in the polls.

30. Why do you think there is pressure to create a "directory" for cells?
Politics..They want to be able to reach out and annoy you..and to identify who you are and how many of you there are:)

31. My son, and me, kind of...
My son only has a cel phone. I have a cel phone, and a home phone, but only because I use DSL. I NEVER use the home phone for calling, and the only time I pick it up is when I am expecting someone to call from my complex's security gate.
