I was watching a discussion last night between James Wolcott of Vanity Fair and the managing editor of National Review on CSPAN. The discussion was actually pretty interesting, but as usual it contained a lot of callers from the extreme on both sides.
There was one woman who called in and said that Ann Coulter was one of her favorite authors. The NR editor said that Ann Coulter's only fault was that she tried to engage in some of the writing tactics employed by the left from a right perspective, and that she was "flamboyant".
Thing was, Wolcott didn't go back and challenge this assertion. He didn't demand that the NR editor cite examples of published authors on the left making statements like: "We need to execute John Walker Lindh to show liberals that they can be killed too for speaking out." "It's too bad that the terrorists didn't fly into the NY Times building." "We need to invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity." "God gave us the earth to do whatever we want with it. He said, 'Here, take it. Do what you want. Rape it. It's yours.'"
It utterly amazes me that people like Coulter actually are allowed to exist within some portion of the mainstream political culture. And it's even more amazing to me that people on the right actually contribute to the mainstreaming of their hatred.
