From my local chapter mailing list
brief access, so sorry if this is a repeat

"One of the other parents there is a Muslim Bosnian woman, a former
school teacher who had to flee because of the war. We were talking
about the election, and she said, "I hope you won't be offended by
this, but the mood of this country, the takeover by these religious
zealots, reminds me of Yugoslavia in the years leading up to the
war." She was very matter-of-fact about, and when I told her I was
stunned by her statement, she just shrugged in her
well-pal-I've-seen-more-in-my-life-than-you'll-see-in-ten way."

So it seems that fleeing can work.
