Allow me to Introduce Myself...
My name is Ed. I am a Democrat living in the Republican stranglehold known as DuPage County, Illinois. And I am one of those you call a millennial.

Why should you care? Remember those polls that said that people of my age loved Kerry, but there was no increase in the number of youth voters? Maybe you didn't make the case strong enough.

I have been lurking on this board now for two years, though the Dean rise, the FOX attack, and all that. But is was this election that made me want to speak out.

I am willing to answer any questions on the beliefs of my generation, since we are the future, but the mainstream of the party needs to see what we are bringing to the table.

I am a big economic liberal and of the same generation, but I am so much more of an economic liberal than most in my generation, I even joined a labor union last year.

Tell us what you think we might like to know about Generation Y. How do you feel about what has occurred?

Are you extremely discouraged or angered or what? Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Would you fight for America if you were called to service?

7. Welcome Ed
Don't take seriously the rantings of people who blame your generation for not turning out. All indicators I have seen show an increase in turnout in the youth vote and that that demographic was the only one that decisively supported Kerry. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to overcome the fundie onslaught (assuming you take as gospel that the election was completely legitimate, which is an open question).

18. Open mind
People of my generation are willing to keep an open mind. We are definitely more conservative than our parents, but we believe in things like gay couplings and reproductive rights.

With the Internet we get all sorts of info, and we can form opinions every previous generation would be jealous of. To us all news and info is valid, no matter how naive that sounds.

So, what should we have done differently? I happen to believe the election was stolen and people your age, DID show up to vote and the repukes threw the votes out. Anyway, what are you bringing to the table?

26. We vote
We are fearful of what the government is doing, but a significant number are too proud to vote because of the obligations they feel they need to accomplish. (They believe that if you vote you got to do jury duty or some other crap).

They feel that the draft is inevitable no matter the winner and that things like the PATRIOT ACT and the INDUCE ACT are the wave of the future. Of the people that did vote, those that didn't vote out of fear (Remember the brimstone predictions of Cheney) voted Libertarian.

29. Wow, that seems so odd
Your peers don't want to vote because they might have to go to jury duty, but ignore that not voting might get them drafted.

Maybe the Libertarian thing indicates some political independence?

Keep it coming, Ed, that's interesting...

31. Just having a drivers license gives them the info they need for jury duty.
All they have to do is vote. No other obligations.

You're right, the draft IS inevitable and the Patriot Act IS the wave of the future. This country is doomed with these RW wackos in power.

33. This is the part thats lost
Unless you look around you wont see that the avalanche had started.

Like today i was talking about the disputed election and they practically called me a heretic.

People of my generation like to follow others or work democratically (not the party, like getting everyones opinion...) . We don't work well in a "ranked" society.

15. Welcome Ed!
We need to make sure that young voters are not discouraged by the events last week, especially since so many put their hears and souls into the campaign and election. I worked at a precinct polling site in a dormitory and was heartened to see the excitement among the students as many cast their first votes ever. We need to keep them involved with an eye toward the future.

16. I don't call anyone a millenial!
I'm sorry, but you're going to have to speak up, sonny. I'm in that grey zone between Baby Boomer and Generation X. The Boomers have been taunting me and my age group ever since Reagan got elected while we were in college (for some reason that was OUR fault, sheesh) and Gen X thinks we're hopelessly out of date. We don't even use the term "dude" correctly (hey we invented it - it meant something different in the 1980s).

Welcome, pull up a chair, and don't let anyone diss you because of your age or beliefs. I've got your back. How old did you say you are again? Who did did you vote for?

27. Strait democrat
I actually considered voting for Badnarik (since this is a safe blue state) but it was ultimately all Democrats.

You know the party here has to challenge all the seats here. We only had one other democrat on the ballot besides Kerry and Obama.

20. Don't believe their lies
"They" say that there was no significant upturn in the turnout of young voters. Young people voted at the same rate as last time, they said. What they're NOT saying is that EVERYBODY voted at a higher rate than last time. The fact that young voters made up the same percentage of voters this time, as they did last time, means that they too voted at a higher rate.

35. Allow me to also introduce myself.
Okay. I can beat you. I've been reading here for at least three and a half years, of which the first two I never took much interest in anything past the front page. As the election has heated up, tho, I've followed so many of the forums and used all the good DU'ers logic to chat with my neighbors.

I spent the past months doing democratic block captain here in my hometown of South Pasadena, CA (hence the name; I'm nothing if not proud. We had a great group visiting all the Dems here -- took over all our own neighborhoods).

I am so glad I live in a blue state.
The worst part of the past few days has been that everytime I leave the house I run into one of the neighbors. One of the hysterical neighbors. One of the good democrats whose hopes were really pinned on this thing. Who are now really afraid and unhappy. So, having been the one who whipped them up with buttons and bumperstickers and lawn signs (South Pas was covered with Kerry signs-you all should be so proud of our Democratic Club), it has been incumbent on me, once again, to bring back some focus and calm, to talk quietly, make sure they don't give up hope.

It's been, well, exquisite.

And yet, can only imagine how my counterparts in the red states are managing. I know you worked even harder than we did and my heart goes out to you. Did I tell you how much I love living in a blue state? LA is a DEM kinda place and the weather is fine this time of year... sigh ... but trust me, we feel your pain.

HENCEFORTH RESOLVED: be more talkative in the future. Glad to join you.
