WOW! Dan Rather! What was that????
Did you SEE that? He showed the photo of the Marine with the cigarette from the cover of the Post, and then he uttered this STRANGE homage to fighting men, and then he choked up.

3. Hard to blame him
He probably wishes the dignity of the press would magically come back. Don't hold your breath.

Dan could do a lot of good if he wanted to. Crying on television? Will that change anything?

5. He just showed a photo
close-up of a soldier in Iraq, his face blackened, a cigarette hanging from his mouth, and Dan Rather said we should all be thankful that this country produced young men like that to go to Iraq "for the right reasons" and how we should never take them for granted.

32. What right reasons could there possibly be?
I didn't see it, because I am boycotting TV, but, seriously. We don't belong there. They aren't over there protecting our freedoms. They're overrunning a sovereign nation.

48. For the right reasons? No. Take them for granted? NEVER!
DUers and progressives should be at the forefront of making sure veterans -- particularly combat veterans -- get all the support, benefits and help they need (support, benefits and help that Smirky McCodpiece and his Misadministration seem intent on destroying). I don't care how ill-conceived or ill-advised the combat is -- these guys put their lives on the line, and they deserve our gratitude and then some.

So Rather was wrong on one count. But he's right about the way vets should be treated.

6. yeah, i saw it. wow.
he said regardless of how you feel about the war, you've gotta be moved by "the picture" and the men and women over there. where do they come from? i personally like dan's emotionality. as on letterman after 9/11. but i don't really feel it for this particular topic. jmho.

10. I feel sorry for the soldier,
who is wounded, spiritually and emotionally, if not physically. I feel sorry for the Iraqi people, tens of thousands who have died or been wounded in the same way. But most of all, I feel sorry for my country. We started this unjust, immoral war, and we will reap the consequences, even those like me who were on the streets marching for peace. May God be Merciful and Compassionate on us all!

He does what he can get away with to slam Bushco! He came down harder on Shrub's new AG than Oberman did! Oberman and Rather are the only two I can stand to watch! I hope Al Gore's network kicks some GOPer ass!

I THINK it was a fairly well veiled slam at the "war"...but it could be taken several ways. Very weird.

13. I think he really hit home the point that
these are REAL people over there, and they are in BIG trouble...as he described the man's eyes seem to be scanning the horizon for coming danger.

Man, I hope the guy's mom or wife didn't see that soldier's poor face.

So my guess is he's either having a flashback, or he's trying to buck up his rep in the aftermath of the election result.

50. He was near tears the day JFK jr's plane was lost.
When the network was going to it's regular programming he signed off with "Don't let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, that for one brief shining moment was known as Camelot." and hardly got the last words out. (Made me cry when he said that)

Dan just must be an emotional guy.

when he also mentions the 100,000 dead Iraqis, I might take him more seriously as a journalist.
Wouldn't it be interesting if they also dedicated a moment to a dead Iraqi child every night?

15. I KNOW! What a complete fool! I laughed my ass off when NPR
played Adolf Ashcrofts "When the Eagles Soar," his own foolish rendition and now Dan Lather it up with jingoism, save me from this crazy world! Someone put it here correctly, "Onward Christian Soldiers." We are a joke to the world, an utter joke. Next thing that will occur, Jerry Fawell will get a position on Bush's cabinet and we won't call it 'taxes' but 'tithing'. I expect Bush's overhaul of the tax system will begin with 10% of my income.

23. He said that we should show the pic to children
so they'd understand ...

and he said something about how tired the guy is, yet still looking to the horizon for coming danger. It was really poetic and seemed a little out of place. But when you think about it, at least it was "reality-based." Not the usual zombie news we've been getting. i give him credit for trying something different, to get through to people.;-)

37. I wonder how much Altria Group paid the New York Post for that cover?
Because that is, hands down, the most shameless exploitation of current events for the sake of advertisement that I have ever seen.

46. Memories...of the war we fought before....
melancholy memories...of the war of '44.

Simple. The pic is supposed to make us all feel like folks did during WWII, a war that I experienced as a child in America.

"PATRIOTISM, people, UNITED PATRIOTISM against an enemy!"

We are supposed to see Bush as FDR (Funny how the Repubs always want to look like strong DEMOCRATIC Presidents, isn't it?)

24. Oh, barf.
Young handsome man with a cigarette dangling from his mouth, who does that remind you of?

Yeah. James Dean.

Barf again. America can't tell what's real anymore. America is sick.

25. Kids! Smoking is cool and macho!
That's why we started all those years ago. I still fight not to light up now. I guess the media owes it to Big Tobacco for their help in bringing in those electoral votes.

26. Oh shit: he, and now I see some of us, are falling for propaganda
NOTHING AGAINST OUR TROOPERS, BUT FOLKS WISE THE FUCK UP!!!!

I have been noticing this in the print press, I saw this picture on the front page of 2 local papers. This is a timeless photo from years gone by; the battle-worn doughboy with the thousand yard stare smoking a cigarette.

Combined with front page photos and action diagrams from Fallujah showing troop movements, regimental ID's and even troop strength (ask yourself: have you seen that lately?)

I fear I am wasting my time, but folks please wise up to the obvious: They are trying to conventionalize this unconventional war. They are trying to scrub this failed war a success by wiping Fallujah off the face of the Earth. the red states eat that shit up

Rather just fell for it. Dont you.

44. Huh?
That was my reaction when I saw it tonight.

The "Marlboro Man" image was bad enough, but then Rather's words made me take a double take (paraphrase): "No matter how you feel about the war, just remember that our soldiers joined for the right reasons, because they love their country."

Huh? What is THAT supposed to mean?

Not to desparage our troops (God forbid anyone accuses me of not supporting them), but did they all join because "they love their country?" Didn't it also have something to do with a job, a career, and a college education? Especially considering that most of them signed up during peace time, before there was even talk of a war, and even before 9/11?

I suspect now that the majority has spoken at the polls (ahem), and no doubt speaks loud and clear to CBS's corporate bottom line, Dan Rather is trying to ingratiate himself back into the "Right's" good graces after "Rathergate." He's cleaning up his image for the "moral majority" in the Red States. He's showing them what they want to see, telling them what they want to hear. He's pandering to his audience's vanity.

Bleh.

in Iraq so we could have the right to vote and scolded us to get off our duffs and vote.

He should choke up.

41. I have a nephew in Kuwait right now, and I thought Dan's
segment was really nice. I know we all see things differently, but I thought he was truly saying no matter how you feel about the people in Wash, we all really do support the troops and they are brave young people. Hell, I would have shot myself in the foot the first day I was called in to go to Iraq.

43. Do any of you remember when the old fart Bush Sr went after Dan
a long time ago when Rather had him on his show? What a nasty bastard. I think Dan had been previously going after the old man about something, and rightfully so, but Chimp Sr had to go on there and bully him and try to embarrass Dan on his own show. I don't think Rather ever forgot that, and has ALWAYS hated all the bushes.

60. Man, what a graphic, swamp rat
I had mixed feelings about the Rather piece...I sure wish they'd show some pictures like the one of that baby. That's what ended Viet Nam; the media showed us what was really going on, and people got outraged and did something about it.

51. First I will say I didn't see the even news today BUT....
Mr. Rather has seen death when he was a young man reporting from the rice fields of Vietnam. He was shot at, plus bombs blowing up around him. The man will always have my respect for what he has done. The pic it self is very sad in two ways. It shows a young man who has seen a lot and it show how a news paper will try to just make money off another's wounds.

Peace

54. i agree...on election night, i was watching NBC
Edited on Wed Nov-10-04 11:31 PM by noiretblu
and the whote brokaw could barely hold himself back from calling Ohio and the election for * when the polls had barely closed on the west coast. i switched to CBS, and there was Dan saying "we are not yet calling Ohio for Mr. Bush." i was in a public place, a gay bar to be precise, and everyone in there cheered. of course the news got more dismal as the night went on, but...thank god for Dan. he was probably the only one on network TV who wasn't pushing * all night long.

56. I'm sorry but thats a crock of crap
Rather is whoring this picture just like the newspapers are. And its even worse because he should know better. Maybe thats why he's crying. CRAP!!

Ask yourself: Why is the pentagon letting these recent combat photos to be released? THINK!

Its called a "reach-around", in prison.

57. I never said that Mr. Rather was not whoring the pic, BUT......
Edited on Thu Nov-11-04 12:30 AM by TriMetFan
Again the man will still have my respect until he says something like: "He likes Bush". But again that pic. says a lot. Also so what if Mr. Rather cried. I remember as a kid watching him reporting form the rice fields of Vietnam when other would not. So he might have been crying cause the pic. was a hunting memory of other young men from a war of yesteryears.
