Chicago -- John McCarron's 4th of July column was a knockout ("Spirit of 4th of July shamelessly politicized," Commentary).
It's the piece I've been waiting for ever since the heisted election of 2000 and, especially, since Sept. 11, 2001. He put into words what millions of Americans--thoughtful Americans--have felt, yet hesitated in speaking out for fear of being considered unpatriotic by the louts of our society.
Referring to the Constitution and its abuse during these incredible years following the black-robed coup that set up George W. Bush as our chieftain, McCarron was eloquent and devastating.
He referred to our attorney general and his stunning assault upon the 1st Amendment.(Personal note: John Ashcroft and I are fellow alumni of the University of Chicago Law School. Was Ashcroft sound asleep during the classes of Harry Kalven, our most passionate and perceptive advocate of the 1st Amendment?)
Ashcroft was obviously echoing the contempt that his chief, George W., felt for our sacred amendment.
