Sen. Chuck Hagel (R) on CNBC Capitol Report asking good questions...
He doesn't buy that Tenant is soely to blame. Want's to know what the VP's office had to do with this because "they are very active in these matters." Says this really needs to be looked into.

1. The Repubs are moving to cover their asses
Seriously, can you believe how this story blew up? It's like an oven on Capitol Hill, and there will be some Repubs trying not to get burnt.

2. For most Republicans that would be the case

but Hagel has been rather criticial of the Bush regime for quite some time. Probably even more so than Nebraska's other DINO disgrace senator.

5. Proud Native Nebraskan here...

finding myself consistently more embarrassed by our "democratic" senator Nelson. Even this consistently "red" state shows the occasional progressive inkling (Governor and Senator Bob Kerry). I can almost be proud of an independent Repub. like Hagel but that sorry boot-lick Nelson? What a miserable hump.

3. Did you notice Tenet specifically covered for Cheney?
Edited on Fri Jul-11-03 08:20 PM by lkinsale
I don't have the transcript in front of me, but somewhere Tenet says specifically that the CIA "on it's own initiative" or something like that, sent Wilson to Africa.

On edit: The transcript says, "In an effort to inquire about certain reports involving Niger, CIA's counter-proliferation experts, on their own initiative, asked an individual with ties to the region to make a visit to see what he could learn."

(And what is this "an individual" stuff. Why are we still pretending we don't know who Wilson is?)

4. Tenent may fall on the sword but
I don't think the career CIA people will allow the agency to take the hit for political reasons. Here come the leaks...

6. What's the history with Hagel and Cheney? Is it payback time?
Hagel seems to really be interested in making sure Cheney can't wiggle away on these issues. Can anyone provide background? Has Cheny crossed or screwed Hagel over before?

7. Hagel wanted to be vice president
Hagel was on the short list to be Bush's running mate I believe, but Cheney was chosen over him. Maybe that has something to do with it.
