Commentary: Jeb Bush's business is the public's now

06/02/98

By TIM NICKENS, St. Petersburg Times

What does Jeb Bush have to hide?

The Republican candidate for governor complains that reporters and political opponents are picking over his business deals, just as they did in 1994 before he narrowly lost to Gov. Lawton Chiles. There are legitimate reasons for the scrutiny.

Having never held elected public office, Bush has no voting record to evaluate. To examine his judgment, competence and ethics requires a thorough examination of his performance in private business.

Second, Bush appears determined to let voters see only part of the picture. That is a strategy that regularly backfires in public office.

The Republican's handling of questions about the contributors to the non-profit foundation he founded is one example of his reluctance to provide complete information.

4. What about the Destin Country Club fraud?
Over 100 million dollars borrowed from a Savings and Loan disappeared?

What about the International Medical Corporation fraud? The company Jebfraud represented stole over a 100 million from state medical funds.

Trust him? What a joke!

10. Really
The governor as the trustee of the fund, just shrugged off the unethical violation of his fiduciary duties. The law doesn't apply to him and his "devious plans."

Jush another $100,000,000.00 theft by the bush crowd. That's why I call him JebFRAUD. Not to worry, the taxpayer picks up the tab.

6. He doesn't want people to see the long list
of convicted felons, drug dealers, money launderers and Cuban terrorists who donate tons of money to put him in power.

8. If they can dig up a sealed court case on Teresa Heinz Kerrey,
they can dig into Jeb's business dealings.
