DU this poll ASAP!
Poll getting freeped...

http://www.cnn.com/

How would you describe the $3.3-billion Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn?

< > Historic scientific endeavor
< > Waste of money
< > Chance to search for aliens

Look at the results! 36% think it's a waste of money! OMFG!

1. Unfortunatly
it isn't just the far-right that is against space exploration.

2. And How Would We DU It?
Seems like DUers might be mixed on the subject.

People are starving in the world, dying of disease & we're taking jaunts around the solar system.

On the other hand, to put it in perspective: 3.3 billion is less than 2% of what we have spent in Iraq

5. Sorry, I thought this was a forum for progressives...
Progressive as in progress.

$3.3b is a bargain for this kind of science and exploration. Versus... hell, what's it up to now? $200b+ for the Iraq adventure?

6. Sorry, but at this juncture
it's a waste of money in my book, especially when there are people right her in the U.S. who are starving, jobless, and who have poor, crumbling schools to go to everyday.

9. "That" kind of progress is fine if you aren't financially strapped already
First order of business is to clean up the mess we've made, even though it won't even begin to happen for four more miserable years.

Hmmm, $350M for tsunami victims, $3.3B for this?

13. So what then? No research of any kind....
... that's not not immediately applicable to social problems? Until when? Until every single social problem in the country and around the world is satisfactorily resolved?

Sheesh.

11. It's a joint operation, NOT all USA project, so the question is ignorant
The mission by the 700-pound Huygens, built and operated by the European Space Agency, is part of a $3.2 billion undertaking by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, ESA and the Italian Space Agency.

Ooops, I didn't copy the link, but the above quote is from a NYT article and is on the thread titled "European craft lands on Saturn's moon" or something like that in GD.

And for those calling it a waste of money, that's about three weeks of killing in Iraq, now THAT'S a waste of more than money.

14. Attitude of fellow DU'ers upsetting... wow...
If I had my druthers, NASA and the DOD budgets would be swapped. Give NASA a few hundred billion dollars per year and let's rock!

I had no idea there were so many that were against space exploration. Good heavens! This is a major event in human history. We've only been to two other planets' surface: Mars and Venus. Both are right next door to us. Now we're on a moon orbiting Saturn. That's incredible! That's almost unbelievable! I am so proud of the scientific community for this accomplishment

But, I forgot that some of the people here were probably protesting the Cassini launch back in '97 and are bitter that there was not a nuclear disaster. Probably even more bitter now that the mission is proving to be a complete success.

16. Unfortunately that's not one of the options.
Yes, I'm sure most people here would prefer to switch the DoD budget with the NASA budget, but that wasn't a choice in the poll. As a result, the choices were untenable to me and I voted for the aliens.

The suggestion that anyone anywhere would be disappointed at the lack of a nuclear disaster is offensive.

17. It's The Money
Space exploration is cool, I'm a bit of a Trekkie and some outstanding scientific progress has been made (in the space program) and applied to other uses.

BUT, the DUers who are opposed probably feel the money could be better spent on feeding the hungry, helping the poor get health insurance, housing subsidies, education, etc.

15. Space exploration is a positive a noble thing for our country to do
We reap unintended benefits and advance scientific knowledge.

Attacking small countries who have not attacked us, on the other hand, puts us on the road back to the Dark Ages.

19. They changed the question to "Do you think some of President Bush's
comments have had unintended consequences?" Talk about a loaded BS question. Bush intended every GD word he said.
