PHOTOS (graphic): Brit soldiers get in on the fun of "blowing off steam"
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 05:05 PM by Bluebear

This is a picture released by a British Court Martial, Tuesday, Jan, 18, 2005 in Osnabrueck, Germany allegedly showing a soldier 'simulating' kicking an Iraqi detainee. Corporal Daniel Kenyon, 33, and Lance Corporals Mark Cooley, 25, and Lance Corpral Darren Larkin, 30, are accused of abusing the men at a humanitarian aid camp known as the Bread Basket, near Basra, Iraq. The three British soldiers pleaded not guilty at a court martial on Tuesday to abusing and sexually humiliating Iraqi civilians in May 2003, although one admitted he had beaten a detained man.

L/Cpl Cooley drives a fork lift with an Iraqi tied to the front, his upper body bound in netting. The soldier says he was moving the man "out of the sun".

7. Hi taxloss, no we are in the throes of the Grand Coronation
Plus in Boston now we are looking for "terrorists" who may have a dirty bomb, so none of this is being reported here.

11. Hi Bluebear - this story has a stranglehold on news in the UK.
Iraq and Atlantic policy has suddenly spiked back up the agenda.

Just what Mr Tony didn't want as he lays out the third term agenda.

Good luck with those turrsts in Boston. They'll probably end end being the same as the endless scares here - shadows on the wall.

15. Hello Taxloss
This story is NOT being reported in the US.

Our media is already bought and paid for.

I love the UK, Canadian, and Australian press, among others, because US Americans are fed spoonsful of bullshit by the US press.

:hi:

23. I never thought that.
I'm a huge Americophile. In the UK they're sometimes called "Atlanticists". I became so when Clinton became pres and I intend to stick with you thorugh the present bout of national craziness.

Atlanticism is, sadly, becoming deeply unfashionable in the UK. A dear friend of mine, and fellow Atlanticist (I thought) said after the reselection: "Of course I still love the US. But they're all morons, aren't they?"

That's what Bush has done in just 4 years.

It's dominating the news here.

Their major said "work them hard". So the soldiers did.

And now we are a nation in disgrace.

10. Is there a "red and blue" in England?
My Canadian friends assure me that they know the difference between the red and blue state Americans and that not all of us support this horror.

13. Well, the colours are reversed - red is left, blue is right.
And the situation is confused. Labour - traditionally of the left - has an iron grip on power, and will be swept to a third-term victory in May. The Conservatives are in disarray and collapsing. Their party, their whole movement, is dying; from the high-water mark of supremacy 15 years ago to near-death today.

However, the ruling Labour party is in the thrall of a right-wing clique led by Tony and it can't seem to shake it off. Tony deserves our respect and thanks for shaking off Tory supremacy, but his action in the second Labour term have been a disgrace. The huge majority in the UK oppose the Iraq war - in a country of 60 million, more than 1 million (including me) gathered in London before the war to voide our dissent. Many more marked that day around the country. So Blair is desperate to divert attention from the war.

This leaves LWers like me in a bit of a bind - I have always voted Labour, and want a Labour government, but do not want a Blair premiership. So I'm stuck.

It's a complicated situation.

or, more likely to believe that he was beaten or kicked so severely that the man's bladder went (as in "I'm going to kick the shit out of you...!")

Or he might have been denied toilet visits...

You know, the usual punishment for resisting our illegal and immoral invasion of his country based on lies and deception of our President...

14. To me, one of the most bizarre things about this story is that...
...these were Iraqis who were caught looting the humanitarian aid warehouse in Basra. They weren't even kept in custody, IIUC. They were caught, humiliated and released.

Now the British have a different chain of command, so the British and Americans came up with the same form of humiliation EXACTLY to deal with two different situations. (The US was doing this shit to prisoners, who were then released and sent back to spy on the people in their towns under threat of being humiliated with the photographs.)

I'd love to read the manual their passing arround on "How To Humiliate and Iraqi in Ten Easy Steps."

And what the hell? Humanitiarian Aid thieves? If they were stealing because they were hungry why not just feed them?
--
Clash - Somebody Got Murdered Lyrics

Someone lights a cigarette
While riding in a car
Some ol' guy takes a swig
And passes back the jar
But where they were last night
No-one can remember
Somebody got murdered
Goodbye, for keeps, forever
Somebody got murdered
Somebody's dead forever
And you're minding your own business
Carrying spare change
You wouldn't cosh a barber
You're hungry all the same
I been very tempted
To grab it from the till
I been very hungry
But not enough to kill

Somebody got murdered
His name cannot be found
A small stain on the pavement
They'll scrub it off the ground

As the daily crown disperses
No-one says that much
Somebody got murdered
And it' left me with a touch
Somebody got murdered
Somebody's dead forever
Sounds like murder!
Those shouts!
Are they drunk down below?
It's late, and my watch stopped
Some time ago
Sounds like murder!
Those screams!
Are they drunk down below?

26. The manual is "The Arab Mind" by Raphael Patai
That is the Neocon-bible on Arab behavior.

Here's a ZMAG article about it:

http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?SectionID=30&ItemID=5611

I have no doubt, that the policies that lead to such torture and abuse were conceived at the top. No few bad apples, because they wouldn't know the details, they were following orders. The fact that they were using sexual humiliation and dogs (dogs are dirty animals in the Arab culture), is a sure sign, that they were explicitly targeting Arabs and tried to break them not only with physical but also psychical terror.
