Is Social Security paying for the war in Iraq?
I was wondering this, since SS is actualy running a surplus. Yet since the money deducted from payrolls does not go into a 'lock box' for SS, it probably is paying for this war and then some!

1. Indirectly it is
The social security surplus is invested in Treasury Securities; which are used for all sorts of programs. Obviously one part of the Bush economic plan is to not have to pay back those securities.

2. No, the deficit is.
The SS trust fund holds some of that deficit -- but if there were noSS trust fund, the bonds would just be sold to the Chinese (at higher interest rates).
