Officer Threatens To Arrest Woman For Anti-Bush Sticker
http://www.thejacksonchannel.com/news/4128372/detail.html

DENVER -- Some people are angry when they see Shasta Bates' derogatory bumper sticker about President George W. Bush -- but she didn't think she'd be threatened with arrest because of it.

The Denver Police Department is investigating a sergeant who allegedly threatened to arrest the 26-year-old for displaying the bumper sticker.

Bates said she was told by the sergeant Tuesday that her bumper sticker was illegal because it was profane. She said he told her he'd arrest her if she didn't remove it.

But City Attorney Cole Finegan said he doesn't believe there's any city ordinance against displaying a profane bumper sticker.

Colorado ACLU Legal Director Mark Silverstein said the alleged threat of arrest clearly violates First Amendment protection.

....according to the story posted about it here yesterday.

i bet if it had clinton's name instead of bush's, the white trash cop would not have given her a problem.

7. If It Was Two Words...I'll Bet You It Wasn't Merry Xmas
If it was the "f-bomb", yes, I would consider it profane to have on a bumper sticker that travels around public areas. If it said "Fuck Clinton", I'm sure people here would be offended. The same thing can be said other ways.

I despise this regime and the manchild as much as anyone, but I prefer those who protest with class than crass.

On Constitutional grounds, I defend this person's right to say what they want where they want, but on the game of winning "hearts & minds"...especially in red & purple states, these kind of things tend to backfire on our causes. It gives food to the O'Reillys and Rushbos that is far too easy picking for them. If they're gonna make up stuff about us, let's make them work for once.

"About 11 a.m. Monday, Shasta Bates, 26, was confronted by a man while standing in a UPS store. The man told her he was upset by her bumper sticker, which read "F--- Bush."

The man then went outside and flagged down Karasek, who was working off-duty in uniform at the shopping center, in the 800 block of South Monaco Parkway.

After reading the sticker and talking to the man, Karasek went into the store to confront Bates.

Bates, three UPS employees and a Rocky Mountain News reporter who happened to be there all say that the officer threatened to arrest the woman if she didn't remove the bumper sticker from her truck."

5. did they not describe the bumber sticker?? terrible reporting
ok, it's about bush, it's derogatory, the sergeant says it's profane and illegal.

i could guess that it says "buck fush", or maybe it has the letters reversed, but WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO GUESS?

even if the editors didn't want to run it verbatim, they should still be able to describe it in greater objective detail. that's the crux of the entire story.

8. well at least dumbo the cop got put in his place
on this issue. Go find a burglary or child molester or something you uptight weenie, and stop wasting the taxpayer's dollar on made up crap.

If you're a cop, it is your job to KNOW the law, not to guess at it. How in the hell can a cop stand there and spout that "ignorance of the law is no excuse" and then be ignorant of the law?

Bad cop. Now go away.
