Fareed Zakaria (on Daily show) for Sec'y of State....?
I have been so impressed with this guy for a couple of years now. I don't even know his ethnicity...I guess he's Arabic of some flavor, but goddamit he's one smart cookie.

1. A seceretary of state who supports the Iraq war? No thanks.
Paternalistic excuses for occupation are not smart.

4. Paternalistic? I haven't seen that...he seems to have a fairly practical
approach to it and says it's a mistake without doing so in a way that could be interpreted as wacky...rather diplomatic, I'd say. Maybe I've missed something though...but I have a kind of gut feeling about him that makes me like him. I am open to discussion, though.

7. Justifying illegal occupation
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 11:44 PM by K-W
by arguing that without the occupation the people would all just kill each other is disingenious and paternalistic. A chaotic nation justifies UN involvement, not illegal occupation. Iraq will never be free or democratic while the US army is there.

But look, I think he is smart and fairly insightful, I just wouldnt want him as secertary of state, he has a good grasp, hes just got the wrong opinion on the acceptability of illegal US occupation.

2. I really like him too
I think he really understands what is going on, instead of understanding what he WANTS to be going on like so many pundits.

5. Thanks for the info. I would have never figured him as an Indian.
His name "sounds" Arabic (not that it matters to me)...

8. your name sounds German
are you an American?

There are plenty of Muslims in India--one of my best friends is a Muslim Indian. Not Pakistani. Indian. Trust me, you do NOT want to get into THAT discussion with her father.

10. Danger!
Fareed Zakaria is dangerous. He's just as much of a global imperialist as the neo-cons, except that he takes more of a voice of reason approach. But he's always been a cheerleader for the Iraq war and the larger neo-con agenda, he merely says it has to be done better, more humanely.

Look at him here in the 2003 Bilberberg group meeting for instance, hanging out with the likes of Henry Kissinger, Richard Perle, and Paul Wolfowitz.

USA - Zakaria, Fareed - Editor, Newsweek International

Note the presence of other similiarly inclined journalists, like Thomas Friedman of the New York Times, also trying his best to sell the war while attempting to sound liberal.

Here's a BBC article on the Bilderberg meeting, if you don't know what it is.

11. Fareed is Indian - he's a good friend....
His family is a very prominent family in India...his father was in Ghandi's parliament and a high-ranking official. His brother Mansoor lives here in the Bay Area and is also incredibly smart. Their family always prided themselves on education and lots of reading. Their family is Muslim (not Hindu) but not strongly practicing - (just like I'm not a practicing Catholic although I was raised Catholic).

:hi:
