EMMA ALBERICI: After 3.5 years stationed in the UK, Paul Pardoel and his young family had intended to start a new life in Canberra when his contract expired in July. Margaret and John Pardoel were hoping to move there too. Speaking this morning on ABC Radio's AM program, Margaret Pardoel said she opposed the invasion of Iraq and always feared for her son's safety.
MARGARET PARDOEL:
I don't like Mr Bush. I don't think this should have gone on. I think it's just cold-blooded murder. Look at all those young American boys that have been slaughtered. I knew it was hotting up because of the elections, and Paul said, "Mum, they're not in uniforms. It could be the baker that serves you bread rolls or something. They've got those rogues with bombs planted underneath. You're fighting a very, very bitter, bad war." He was desperate - he was aiming to get out as soon as he could.
