Is the real meaning of "Ownership Society" simply what America
was like before the New Deal? There are still many alive who remember the beginnings of the Great Depression. Those of us who are into History can also imagine no Government "interference" in things like keeping people from starving and dying from curable illnesses. Is this really what Mr. Bush wants, to go back to truly Socially Darwinistic chaos? Are the Democrats shouting about this if it is the case? They seem to be just barking at the edge of this mass grave. When will it change?

Through debt and lifelong servitude.

Welcome to the ownership society. If you have not been assigned an owner yet, please report to Iran for duty.

7. He wants to take us back to feudalism.
If you were a serf and had a compassionate lord of the manor, he made sure all his serfs didn't starve and had a place to live. Forget about health care, even the lord of the manor was lucky to get anything resembling that in those days. In exchange the serfs slaved on the land or in the castle for the benefit of the lord and his knights who were supposed to keep them safe.

If you had a dunce or a cruel lord of the castle, then you suffered either from mismanaged affairs, starvation or plague. Although the lord of the manor though and his family and retainers always made sure they had plenty to eat and plenty of treasure.

Is this beginning to seem familiar?

9. An added benefit for the lord today...
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 01:26 PM by bush still has to go
He can take out "dead peasant" policies on the serfs so he makes out like a bandit both when they're are alive (and toiling), and when they're dead as well!

8. Bush would like to reinvent the "Poor House" and kill SS.
We have underestimated the attraction of lower taxes and no safety net.

It all reminds me of the chanting sheep in the the Animal Farm. "Four legs good two legs bad" was changed to "Four legs good two legs better" After the pigs started to walk around on their hind legs. Face it we are gullible.

10. Medieval england was an "ownership society".
It reminds me of something George Carlin said. He was talking about meaningless, feel-good phrases. He said something like, "Atilla the Hun had an active, outdoor lifestyle".
