Dean: New York GOP chairman must apologize or resign

By MARC HUMBERT
AP Political Writer

February 16, 2005, 2:39 PM EST

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Howard Dean, just four days into his job as Democratic National chairman, called Wednesday for New York's state Republican chairman to apologize or resign over remarks linking Democrats to a civil rights lawyer convicted of aiding terrorists.

Calling Stephen Minarik's comments "offensive," the former Vermont governor said, "The American people deserve better than this type of political character assassination."

There was no immediate comment from Minarik.

10. yeah, and why is Hillary's consultant saying this:
...rather than Hillary herself?

"if you make that mistake again, you best be prepared to make it to my face, because we love this country much too much to allow you to ever question our patriotism."

I like the tougher talk. I'm glad Dean is stirring the pot. But dammit, I want Hillary talking some smack, too.

19. Nope
The head of the GOP becomes the issue in the next election and every local election becomes a statewide election. He gives a unifying theme for the party throughout the state.

16. Wolfson got Howard's back, too!
"Don't accuse the 5.5 million Democrats in this state of treason if you hope to win our votes," said Howard Wolfson, a Democratic consultant and top adviser to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. "And, if you make that mistake again, you best be prepared to make it to my face, because we love this country much too much to allow you to ever question our patriotism."

HOT DAMN!

17. A slightly different take
I am glad to see Howard Dean standing tall, but the prosecution of Lynne Stewart was a John Ashcroft led travesty and ought to outrage anyone that believes in the right to counsel and the attorney client privilege. On the one hand you can say Dean was standing up, to me it is Dean backing down by accepting the government's position that this woman was a "terrorist". I have no problem being linked to Lynne Stewart, she was doing her job. Link me to her instead of John Ashcroft any day.

18. A slightly different take on your point --
-- Which I think is a good one. It seems more to me Dean and Wolfson are going straight for the jugular by calling Minarik on his attempt to exploit the conviction of Lynne Stewart for his own agenda, rather than having their point obscured and feeding him more material by debating the legitimacy of Stewart's conviction. I tend to agree she was set up by Singin' John.

20. No, I don't disagree that it is a good thing for him to call them out
when they misrepresent the facts and I definitely like to see him showing some backbone. But I hate to see Dems run away from something as serious as this, and seriously wrong, in my opinion, simply because the Republicans yell "Terror!"
