Why would Syria want to kill Prime Minister Harriri of Lebanon...
<snip>

Israel and/or America Implicated in Killing of Rafik Harriri:

"This is the work of an intelligence service, not a small group," said Rime Allaf, Middle East analyst at London's Royal Institute of International Affairs.

Sam Hamod, Ph.D.

02/14/05 "Information Clearing House" - - We must do as they do in other criminal cases, look at who had the most to gain from the assassination of Prime Minister Harriri. The Lebanese had a lot to lose, as did the Syrians (he was close to Bashir Al Assad, the leader of Syria), as did the other Arab countries in the region who saw him as a strong leader and a stabilizing force in Lebanese politics. On the other hand, Israel has wanted chaos in Lebanon, as has America, and both countries have been agitating to get Hezbollah outlawed and both America and Israel have wanted the Lebanese to oust Syria. In both cases, the Lebanese government has said, “NO,” that Hezbollah is a respected part of Lebanese life and that Syria is there to protect Lebanon from Israeli aggression.

No matter where else you look, no one else had anything to gain except Israel and the U.S. because this death could cause some possible upset in Lebanese politics and life.

<snip>

It’s time these killings in Iraq, in Lebanon, and even the assassination of the Prime Minister of Georgia, a foe of American oil pipelines, be stopped, and that the world set up an investigation team to look into these matters because they create more chaos and misery for the world.

1. I thought Israel's Sharon must be behind the killing....
That was the first thing that crossed my mind, Sharon did it.

I also thought about the greed for world power under this bush administration, and it would be very easy for another country, let's say Russia's Putin, to have stirred the shit a little more against the US.

The US today is alone and we are very vulnerable, and not safe at all. If bush attacks Iran, we're gonna be facing China and Russia, and a huge coalition of the willing to stop the US. Little bush and followers don't care because they are the born again ignorants looking for jesus's coming. I'm afraid if other world powers don't stop bush, we're all be forced to drink the kool-aid.

2. Your logic escapes me
Don't you think the prospect of an anti-Syrian Prime Minister being elected was somewhat troubling to the Syrians?

Don't you realize American public opinion is turning against Bush's foreign policy as Americans witness the Middle East descending into chaos? Neither the Bush administration nor the Israelis had anything to gain from the assassination.

4. This doesn't make sense
Hariri wanted Syria out of Lebanon and Syria wanted to stay. Assad and Hariri were not exactly close.

The Americans and Israelis don't want "chaos" in Lebanon - they want Hezbollah and Syria weakened and isolated. And they want Syria out of Lebanon entirely.

Still, Syria really had nothing to gain in Hariri's death. It has become an excuse for the US to rachet up the pressure on Syria to comply with Resolution 1559, which they should do, just like the Israelis should comply with Resolutions 242, 337 and their progeny.

I don't think it is clear who killed him.
