3. Wow. Anderson Cooper did one helluva job.
Thanks for providing the link to the transcript. I didn't get to see the actual interview and my dial-up won't show video.

Cooper really asked the tough questions, and GanGuck really gave f*cked up answers. Did he sound as screwed up as it looks in the transcripts?

I noticed that Howie Kurtz had to get one more dig in at the bloggers. When is he going to give up? He's useless.

Did anyone else notice Guckert's eyes? They are all over the place.

12. Yes, I certainly did.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, I was thinking that I was being too critical and just looking for something weird. Thanks for posting this. His eyes were giving me the creeps.

13. His eyes were just like Bush in the debates
Gannon's eyes were all over the place. He stammered, and spoke in 2-3 word broken chunks, JUST LIKE BUSH did in the debates. All I could think of when I was watching this video was how Bush had acted. Now it just occurred to me that he was probably wired up the same way too. Rove was talking into his ear piece.

Is there any video footage that shows his back. I can do a photo enhancement of it.

5. My 2 cents says...
Yes, I got the impression that he was sent on the interview by someone behind the scenes (Rove or whoever).

However, he really only had one way to try to spin it and that was to claim that to attack him for his personal life is unfair because the motives behind it were wrong (i.e that 'they did it because they disagree with me').

Unfortunately, this didn't cut it by a longshot and Anderson Cooper tore into him in a way I frankly haven't seen ANYONE on CNN do EVER. That kind of tough interviewing hasn't been seen since, I don't know, maybe some Koppel of a few years back.

Final Results: Cooper 120, Guckert: 96

5 Days Later, Guckert Tells E&P He'll Talk Again, and He Does, on CNN

By Joe Strupp

Published: February 18, 2005 5:55 PM ET

NEW YORK Five days after telling E&P that he was no longer speaking to the press because it was not helping him, former White House reporter James Guckert, a.k.a Jeff Gannon, said today that he had changed his mind and was seeking the right media outlet to tell his side of the story. Asked this afternoon about reports that he was scheduled to appear on the Anderson Cooper's CNN show tonight, he denied it strongly. One hour later, a CNN spokesman told E&P, "He's taping it right now."

The segment appeared later Friday on the CNN show. Among other things, Guckert admitted that his news stories, by design, were little more than re-writes or edited transcripts of White House handouts and briefings. Cooper replied: That's not reporting, "that's faxing." "My side of the story has been poorly reported," Guckert had told E&P before the CNN appearance. He is the former Talon News reporter who resigned last week amid criticism that he asked partisan questions, used an alias and set up numerous sex sites. "One of the frustrating parts has been that everyone has been willing to say things and not make the effort to speak with me. ...

"There are a lot of people out there left hanging and bewildered by this," he told E&P. "I need to speak to a couple of issues. I need to talk about my relationship with the White House and whether I was a plant or not -- that needs to be brought out." When asked to address those issues to E&P, Guckert declined. He also would not confirm or deny reports he had worked as a male prostitute, but said he would address those questions as well soon.

"That would have to be part of it," he said about the prostitution and sex Web site issue. "I can’t leave all that out there. I am still working with people who are advising me. It has to be done the right way or it may do more harm than good." Guckert, 47, was referring to the onslaught of coverage he has drawn as revelations about everything from using an alias at the White House to setting up Web sites have burst out on blogs. For example, he criticized the MSNBC show Hardball and radio host Don Imus for doing segments in the past two days on him without seeking his input.

9. He's criticizing Hardball and Imus for doing segments without his input.
How much input did Gannon get from Tom Daschle when he was doing the bogus reports on Daschle in South Dakota?

This guy is a whore in every possible sense of the word.

16. Gee, I hope someone mentions that to
Don"Hubris" Imus. Imus is so full of himself that he'll talk this story up big time, to all of his red state listeners. The GOP sheep are fighting like hell to ignore the 200 pound whore in the press room; he needs to be pushed in their faces by one of their founts of wisdom....

24. Great advice. Just sent this:
I'd like to compliment Anderson Cooper on his interview with Guckert/Gannon on 2/18/05.
That, my friend, was journalism. Zahn and Blitzer should have been taking notes.
The way to get news is to ask the questions they don't want to answer.
Good job!

18. Cooper lets him get away with the fascist frame
Here is the framing:

"GUCKERT: How I'll address that is that I have made mistakes in my past. And these are all of a very personal and private nature that have been -- that have been all brought to the surface by people who disagreed with the question I asked at the presidential press conference several weeks ago."

'How I'll address that'? Obviously he has been coached in exactly what to say here.

His man-whore business - public websites advertising prostitution services with full frontal nude pictures of Guckert - is 'very personal and private nature'. Right.

Cooper never challenges the spin.

"COOPER: What your critics say, though, is that while a lot of this may be politically motivated, that liberal bloggers who didn't like the question you ask or don't like you in general are targeting you and revealing things about your personal life,"

"COOPER: Was anyone at the White House aware of your private activities?"

The man-whore business was not private, Coop. What this critic is saying is that the man-whore business was in public domain and that the claim of invasion of privacy is the right wing fascists trying to spin this back into control.

Cooper finally gets around to the framing issue at the very end of the interview:

"COOPER: You have been very clear that you believe this is politically motivated. And I think just about everyone probably agrees with that, that you asked that question, it was a softball, and liberal bloggers went after you to find out what they could in the public domain about you. But isn't that -- and you say that's unfair. Isn't that -- aren't those the same techniques that you yourself used as a reporter that sort of -- to publish innuendo, to publish advocacy-driven, politically motivated reports?"

Not quite: 'but Jim, your escort service was publicly advertised, how is that your personal private life?'

'Gannon' restates the frame at the end, unchallenged of course:
"And, again, it makes us all wonder that if someone disagrees with you, that is now your personal life fair game? And I'm hoping that fair-minded people will stand up and say that what's been done to me is wrong, and that -- that people's personal lives have no impact on their ability to be a journalist, you know. Why should my past prevent me from having a future?"

It doesn't man-whore. Your rates can probably go up to $300/hour.

19. Bingo! Prostitution ain't private - it's a very PUBLIC business
Edited on Sat Feb-19-05 08:31 AM by robbedvoter
Charging money for sex, advertising for services do not enter the "private life" in any universe - except of course IOKIYAR.
But at least he got him to admit the "unvarnished' copying of the WH transcripts.

21. Last I checked, prostitution isn't a legal activity
in the dc region (where he operated/advertised). The whole "private life"... thing ... I am a victim thing.... with no admission that these activities were of his own doing... what a moran. Crawl back into the woodwork James. Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame (victimhood). And then deal with the aftermath that follows of your OWN actions be they acting as a propogandist, the unseemly actions of prostituting marketing using the military, or just the illegal activities associated with your prostitution.

23. I was very pleasantly surprised
to see Anderson throw him some hardballs. I have never seen anyone shift their eyes and blink so much - Gannon was totally uncredible. When he said that he had to change his name because Guckert was too hard to pronounce, I kept thinking tell that to Jim Miglishevski(sp?)Keith Olberman also had a scathing peice on Guckert/Gannon. I love it!!

which is in stark contrast to his self-assured arrogance in the WH press conference.

He needs to save his ass while he can.

26. "the job I was asked to do"...who asked him?
Listening to the interview, I wondered who did the asking. Does Guckert claim that Eberle asked him (I think the answer is no), and if not, who did? How did Guckert get in touch with "Talon"? Can't a MSM person ask that of him to see how he answers?

COOPER: Your critics bring up your past, that whether or not you did work as an escort as going to your credibility, that you know, should somebody who perhaps was working as an escort was getting access to the White House and being passed along through the Secret Service. Was your employer aware of your past activities?

GANNON: My employer was never at any time aware of anything in my past beyond the writings I did, because, frankly, it isn't relevant to the job I was asked to do, which was to be a reporter.
