Geraldo sank to a new low on Saturday
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 10:47 AM by underpants
ON EDIT- Changed the subject line to more accurately reflect the comments in this thread.

I observed the following on Saturday.

Apparently the last person to realize that Nichols was in custody was the CNN anchorwoman. I could tell from the way the cops were walking out of the apartment complex they either had the guy or Nichols was shot. For a brief moment when the hostage situation first broke and the Gwinnett county spokesman was on saying that the area was blocked off I thought we might miss this story from the comfort of our living rooms-thank god for the helicopter shots.

My wife and I couldn't believe that the black bald male they were clearing patting down beside the SUV could be anyone BUT Nichols. This continued for at least five minutes.

I switched over to Fox and they weren't sure either. Fox apparently got every black person they could find to be on the air. It was nice to see on one hand but both 24 hour news agency seemed determined to get black faces on the screen. I am not sure exactly why but the guys they had on had some very good insight and commentary.

The two commentators (not the anchor) that Fox had on very quickly made the point that it didn't matter if the deputy was a woman or not. The amount of training and techniques used by law enforcement make it a moot point. I will say this, that guy could have taken down almost anyone I saw in uniform or not in uniform and that includes myself.

Lastly let me say a word about Geraldo Rivera......SLIME!

He apparently was in Atlanta or flew there directly and in the period after the arrest he had several people who lived in the neighborhoods on. They all had seen basically the same thing-Nichols looked to be exhausted and dazed.

Then a moment of TV history- Geraldo was on an audio feed and he had managed to get Barry Hazen Nichol's defense lawyer in the rape case. Let me say that Hazen struck me as being very sharp both on CNN later in the day and on the Today Show this morning. Rivera was laughing with an "innocent bystander just trying to do her job" (another resident of the apartment complex) when he starting talking to Hazen. Geraldo related what Hazen had told him-that his office wasn't very far from the courthouse and that he usually drives but on Friday he decided to walk.

Geraldo (close quote)~"So hehehe it is safe to say that if you hadn't walked to work yesterday and gotten there a few minutes later than normal hehehe you would be dead right now"

Hazen-silence followed by a diplomatic effort to not comment directly on the asinine statement Geraldo had just made.

Then that night ABC WNT tonights coverage of the events of the last two days included the following "The alleged death of the judge" I don't remember who the anchorman was but he said that at least twice.

1. "The alleged death of the judge"?
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 10:51 AM by Bluzmann57
Well I am not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure he's dead. That anchorman should be fired right now for an idiotic statement like that. I can understand saying "the alleged gunman", even though he did it in front of several witnesses, because a person is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, but "The alleged death of the judge"? He's dead. Period. Its unfortunate and hopefully the person who caused him to be dead will recieve the appropriate punishment. And hopefully, enough people heard that anchormans comment so that they will complain to station management to get rid of the guy.

18. They're a pretty illiterate bunch. Here are two F-words they misuse
all the time:
Fulsome as if it were a synonym for "full" or "extensive"

and Fortuitous as if it meant "fortunate."

Both of these usages make my hackles rise.

20. Correct. Geraldo uses "alleged" in the wrong place.
Nicols hasn't been found guilty of a thing, so he's the "alleged" killer, but the judge sure as hell is DEAD - not allegedly so.

3. CNN's people are falling all over themselves saying "alleged"
They seem to be so afraid of making a mistake (a la Dan Rather?) that they are almost to the point of alleging it happened in Atlanta!

4. I agree with you and king above
I understand that they have to say that but I think it was pretty clear that he had done the killings.

If it hadn't been over such a tragic event I would have laughed at the news coverage....laughed harder that is.

5. That's just the way Geraldo's alleged mind works
Remember he did a stand-up in Iraq at the site of some mortar attack. He stood next to a little hollow in the ground and intoned that had he been there just a little while before, he might have been killed by this. Very. Round.

The man has a heightened and unwarranted sense of personal drama that he apparently thinks extends to everyone else on the planet.

6. Jaysus wept!
He's sunk as low as the average blonde airhead who jams a microphone into the face of a bloodied accident victim whose children were all killed and asks him how he FEELS.

I remember him 35 years ago, when he ferst broke into the business as an obviously Hispanic reporter (not another white guy with a Spanish surname). He was very good. Then he got the fever and turned Repuglican and now he is what he is. If I still bothered with TV propaganda, his face on the screen would have me reaching for the remote.

8. Yes he did blow the doors off the existing mental health system
back then. His undercover reports caused huge changes in the state hospital systems.

Since then he has gone quickly down hill. I don't know if he is necessarily more republican I think that Fox was the only place left that would hire him.

11. Remember that line from the movie Thelma and Louise?
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 11:14 AM by Straight Shooter
Louise wants to make sure that Thelma isn't turning them in, they discuss it a moment, and then Louise says, "Well, we wouldn't want to end up on the g'damn Geraldo show."

I thought that summed it up pretty nicely.

edit: odd typo

12. Natural Born Killers
I always thought (I think it is the common understanding) that Robert Downey Jr.'s role was supposed to be a Geraldo type.
