What's this crap about "Democracy is on the march in the middle east."
Bush has a sham election in Iraq while there is still violence and chaos in Iraq and these guys think he's the best thing since sliced bread. Jesus Christ there will be a short break in the killing until they find out that Bush isn't allowing themselves to assert their power and then the Iraqi mullahs will go apeshit and oreder their followers into the streets to start killing US troops again.
The sad part is that the grunt is the one that pays for the greed of Bush, not Bush himself because the Democrats are too scared to stand up to him.

1. Juan Cole is the man
The simplistic master narrative constructed by the partisans of President George W. Bush held that the January 30 elections were a huge success, and signalled a turn to democracy in the Middle East. Then the anti-Syrian demonstrations were interpreted as a yearning for democracy inspired by the Iraqi elections.
...

The Lebanese have been having often lively parliamentary election campaigns for decades. The idea that the urbane and sophisticated Beirutis had anything to learn from the Jan. 30 process in Iraq is absurd on the face of it. Elections were already scheduled in Lebanon for later this spring.

3. Hey, Sasquatch, you logged onto DU, so WTF?
No, from any reasonable viewpoint, democracy is not on the march, anywhere. Everything you see and hear, take with a grain of salt. This is the new Amerika, and democracy is being squashed.
And I feel for and think about our soldiers.
