It's better NOT to oppose the repubs in congress
Does anyone else at this point feel we just need to give them enough rope?

It's almost as if we're HELPING them by opposing them. The dems in congress should have let them kill social security. It's one of the ONLY issues that effects EVERYONE.

After they killed it we could have ran on a platform of restoring social security. Then with a landslide victory on 06 & 08 it would be a simple matter to do so.

Dems in congress should also silently be encouraging them to start a draft and we should handle it the same way.

It's pretty simple. Draft + ending social security = guranteed dem landslide in 06 & 08.

We're trying to win on issues such as iraq and we fail to realize that most americans don't give a damn about anyone else as long as they get theirs. So what if some iraqi kid gets blown up in Iraq? I still get my cheap gas right? A draft would put a quick end to that.

So what if the republicans want to gut social programs? I don't need food stamps and I still get my social security right? Right?

We need to let them screw EVERYONE and then run on that. Otherwise I don't see how the political situation is going to change enough in order to start dealing with this train wreck.

18. No, paper is fed into the central tabulators
Which are remotely accessed by modem and KKKarl Roves computer room he had set up election night. They needed to know how many votes to add. They fucked up in Ohio by letting bush get more votes than there were voters in some precincts and counties. That glitch will be fixed by midterms.

4. absolutely not
the dems need to fight for what's right. Thats why we elected them.
If they don't, then they don't deserve our vote next time around!

7. Get real
They can't fight as a minority in a majority takes all system. They can only BEGIN to do that when majority status is gained.

10. You have to take a stand even as a minority
You can't just roll over and be tromped on. They were elected to fight for their constituents and they should do that, period.

5. Yes and No
I do think that the only way the Dems will regain control of the government is to give them enough rope to hang themselves with.

At the same time if we roll over and let them do what they want then the Dems won't have a solid leg to stand on and say 'See! We told you so!'

I'd be wary of being in the position of reacting to what they are doing. The Dems need to be proactive. Bush hasn't even put forward an official proposal yet.

I think shutting down the government would be playing into their hands. People didn't side with Clinton over Gingrich during that shutdown because they liked his ideas more. They just didn't like Gingrich's attitude. Shutting down the government, excessive fillibusters...I don't see these as helping.

We need to give them enough rope that we can then turn back to the country and say 'Look!' but we need to keep our hands on that rope, and keep it taut...too much slack, and we're helping them and just as complicit. IMHO

8. If the dems don't oppose the repubs platforms
Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 11:06 AM by Merlot
why would people be inclined to vote for them?

If people don't like what the repubs are doing, they won't vote for dems by default. They will vote for dems when they see them as a solution. Also, not opposing a policy implies a tacit approval of the plan.

BTW, once SS is gone, it's gone. I think that's a high price to pay for winning mid-term elections.

9. How would it be gone?
Edited on Sat Mar-19-05 11:08 AM by LoganW
It could be created in the first place, therefore it could be created again.

Though that wouldn't be necessary because almost all legislation specifies when it will take effect. The republicans SS legislation could be repealed before it took effect fully.

"If people don't like what the repubs are doing, they won't vote for dems by default."

Afraid not. Most people don't pay enough attention to realize what the repubs are doing. The last 4 years should have taught you that.

"why would people be inclined to vote for them?"

Because they will remain mute and oppose them AFTER the fact.

11. Look what happened when the Social Democrats told each other,
(in effect) "Throw (the Nazi Party) a bone, and they'll be happy." Germany was never the same. A minority political party changed the world.

12. yes and no
yes they are going to hang themselves with the rope they have. They are now going after program after program that does affect peoples' daily lives. And when I am personally affected - I am less susceptible to the spin. They are so emboldened and aggressive that they no longer risk just losing the presidency - but congress and general support for their party in many many parts of the country.

But no, we shouldn't further enable it. The dems need to be seen as in opposition to their awful policies - they will pass whether or not they are opposed. But if the dems join in - it will be claimed that it is the fault of both - and thus folks won't be as likely to turn away from the true pushers of the policies that damage our citizens and our society.

14. Burn The Village To Save It...Maybe
After the 2002 elections, when the Repugnicans took control of the Senate, I felt the same way. Let 'em ramrod their crap through and the more the merrier, I had faith in the common sense of the American people to realize what a bunch of corrupt crooks were in charge and would kick their sorry asses out in 2004. Didn't quite happen.

The pains I expected then were nowhere near what we've experienced, and my dread of what's going on in Washington now, I'm sure doesn't match even my worst dread at this time. But the sheeple seem content. They like their Desperate Housewives and Nascar and IPods and SUVs and don't really care about the world beyond their noses...and when it is tweeked, there are the Repugnicans with a message that it's the Democrats that did it. With no real coherant Democratic party message, this goes unchecked time after time.

I oppose throwing fillibusters and trashing Democrats who cross over on certain votes that would mean local political suicide since the party's position is so tenuous. This should be the time Democrats should be organizing, coordinating and working on campaigns to highten awareness locally to all the damage the Repugnicans have, are and will be doing and to do it door-to-door, precinct by precinct...building a stronger party that can win on it's own strengths and principals and not on Repugnican mistakes.

Many, many people know this country's going in the wrong direction and have less and less confidence in this regime but they don't feel they can speak out without the heavy hammer of the right wing corporate media pounding them or facing being called "UnAmerican" or some other ridicule that's effectively dumbed down a "silent majority". Until people can not only feel free, but proud to speak out, the nightmare continues...

15. An ounce of prevention vs. a pound of cure
The old adage still holds true. If we just let the Reds screw up this country, it'll take decades to repair the damage. It's already going to take decades to repair what * has already unleashed on America and the whole world.

Just imagine if Hitler's opponents said, "Sure, let's give Adolf everything he wants. Book burnings, concentration camps, the whole lot. We'll pick up the pieces after he's gone." How could you respect anyone who took that idea seriously?

17. Excuse me but,
"It's pretty simple. Draft + ending social security = guranteed dem landslide in 06 & 08."

We could run Jesus Christ and not win with electronic vote stealing. That is a fact like it or not. If the vote stealing isn't fixed by midterms they have their 60 votes to ram through anything they want. Howard Dean please help us.
