Jessica Lynch to visit family of Lori Pewistewa for ceremonies honoring her. Another victim of Bush's lies.

1. Her story touched me more than any other.
Here's part of it so lurking freeper chickenhawks can read it and hopefully be ashamed enough to go fight their own friggin' war.

When Young Mothers Die In Combat

By Anthony Gancarski
CounterPunch

When Americans die in foreign wars, we're told never to forget those singular losses by cable networks like Fox News and MSNBC.
Let's take those grave admonitions at face value, and never forget exactly why Pfc. Lori Ann Piestewa died. Piestewa, one of the very few Hopi women in the military, was the 23 year old mother of a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.
The mother of two was with Pfc. Jessica Lynch (who joined the military, according to her father, because McDonald's wasn't hiring) when their unit was ambushed on March 23rd near Nasiriyah. Lynch survived to see her trials sanitized by cable television; Piestewa won't be so lucky.
What kind of nation have we become, to send mothers in the primes of their lives to die like dogs on foreign battlefields? Piestewa hailed from an indigenous people, yet her life was so blighted that she had to sign up with the U.S. military - in spite of having two children - to avoid the vise of poverty that has crushed what's left of the Hopis and other tribal nations.
She did what she could for her kids every bit as much as that flag our conquering heroes covered the face of Saddam Hussein's statue with, but her kids will be left orphaned, with only fleeting memories of the woman who brought them into the world...(more)

5. I remember hearing about her
So sad. :( She and Lynch I believe were very close friends, if not best. It's so sad how Bush is just abusing the military and their families like this.

3. Jessica Lynch has shown far more dignity and grief over Ms. Piestewa ...
... than the entire Bush Administration. She seemed genuinely bewildered and embarrassed by all the media attention. She lost a friend, and those children lost their mother -- and all the White House could do was try to benefit from the ordeal. Her integrity makes their lack of it all that more obvious.

6. I first found out about Lynch
from Al Franken's show when he had her on talking about the friend of her's and other issues. I really admired her for telling the truth about her situation and not just go along with the Pentagon story.

7. I do have the utmost respect for Jessica. She has stayed quiet.
No movies, no book deals, no Hollywoood. And she could have. Thank you dear Jessica, for your morals.

8. they renamed squaw peak after Lori.
jessica said that Lori really did the heroic acts that were credited to her, she went down shooting.

"Piestewa Peak Facts
Highest Point
Piestewa Peak elevation is 2,608 feet. Total elevation gain for summit trail is 1,190 feet.
History
Long used for mining and grazing, it did not become a city of Phoenix possession until 1959, when the area was annexed and a long-term lease agreement was signed with the state of Arizona. It later became one of the major rallying points for mountain preservation efforts.

Geology, flora and fauna
It is important to remember that the Phoenix mountain preserves are open, undeveloped desert areas. Please use care when heading out as hikers routinely encounter rocky terrain, rattlesnakes and other potential hazards native to the Sonoran Desert. If you encounter a rattlesnake, allow it space and time to escape.

While the actual rocks of the Phoenix Mountains (including the areas around Piestewa Peak and North Mountain) are very old, the mountain shapes are, geologically speaking, quite young. They were formed about 14 million years ago as the crust of the earth was gradually stretched from northeast to southwest, elevating mountain ranges and downdropping the basins between them. Much of the area’s rock is a metamorphic type of granite known as schist. Mercury mines were worked in the area of today’s Dreamy Draw Recreation Area."
