Talk about Christian hypocrisy!
I had someone approach me over the weekend, and in a very confrontational manner ask me two questions:

1. Are you 100% sure you're going to heaven?
(I answered no)

2. He then asked me if that bothered me and how I was going to deal with that issue. (He had almost a psychotic look on his face)

After I told him I wasn't interested in getting into a debate with him, I started thinking....

Isn't it interesting how Christians are so concerned about gay people trying to impose their lifestyle on them, when apparently it's okay for the Christians to try to impose their lifestyle and values on me.?!?!

1. Yep
I've noticed that myself. People in the LGBT community keep to themselves and don't force their lifestyles all over the place. But boy the fundies sure like to push themselves on you like crazy. :banghead:

6. see, that's the first thing I thought about it
that I find what fundies do far more offensive than anything gays do; it's that simple to me. Gays don't show up at my doorstep trying to get me to "convert" but those g.d. "Christians" sure do.

2. Wait for it...
The usual bitching about how we are persecuting Christians, the "war on Christianity", blah blah blah.

And about your post, I agree.

Their view or religious tolerance is "You have to respect our beliefs, you have to listen to our views, and you have to shut the fuck up."

27. You're expressing yourself right now aren't you?
Or do you mean you want to express yourself and make sure other's can't express their disagreement with you?
From what I have seen here at DU in a few short weeks, is not that people object to someone's not being religious or disagreeing with religion. What I see people object to is being painted with a broad brush or being told the believe in magic cloud beings, just for example.
What the subject needs is mutual respect. Unfortunately there are people here incapable of respect for differing opinions. I have no idea if that applies to you since I don't remember ever reading a post by you on the topic.
So I would say you have a right to express yourself and I have a right to express myself and we will probably be just fine as long as both of us remember to let the other define their own position and don't make inflamatory language the mode of expression.

but we are routinely told that any expression that doesn't goose-step to "Christianity" is BASHING Christianity. I would never presume to show up on a person's doorstep pleading for them to think differently but I am subjected to this kind of intrusion quite often. There's no "mutual respect" - I am bombarded with this crap on TV and in real life. I really wish there was someplace I could get away from it but guess what - there is no such place.

I find this overt and condescending attitude by some Christians to be the antithesis of what Jesus taught. I would have told this person to go @#$% themself, then go home and look in the mirror and ponder the log in their own eye.

4. That was a fundy that attacked you, I'm almost sure of it.
A regular, everyday, average Christian normally doesn't do shit like that.

How do I know? I'm Catholic and have NEVER, EVER attacked someone. I find it offensive when I've ben attacked on the street.

Allow me to apologize to you. It is pure hyprocracy. A true Christian knows it is not their place to judge another human being. A true Christian is more concerned with the plight of the poor and those whom the world steps on rather than whom one chooses to share their private bedroom with.

I'm an agnostic and bought his book after seeing him on "The Daily Show." It's called "God's Politics" I highly recommend it. I've since made a point of making sure I see him when he's on. If more Evangelical Xtians were more like him I think they would be much more tolerated here. I have all the respect in the world for him.

We have our views but a real Christian wouldn't come and attack you. Just a rightwing fundie. Real Christians do reach out but not in that sense. It's so disgusting how these people are. To me they are nothing more than "holier than thou" attitudes and loud mouths who think they're right and don't practice what they preach. :grr:

To me, Christ valued all people. He cared for the poor and those stepped on by the powerful and wealthy. That's what religion (no matter what faith you may choose to practice) is about- kindness and love.

RW Catholics act similar to the fundies in many ways.

They are getting more brazen and in your face every day.

They are taking apart our country and doing it in the Name of God.

Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 10:52 AM by Kerrytravelers
unfortunately, fundies come in all religions- the RC sure is getting their fill of them. Believe me.

Last Saturday was the first time in over a year my husband and I attended Mass. We did it for the Pope's passing, but were a bit on edge the whole time. Walking up to the church, we saw a car with a b/c sticker and a dole/kemp sticker. But during the homily (this is when the priest gives the message) he spoke of wolrd peace and not killing others in the name of greed. We were a bit surprized. We will actually consider looking into this particular parish a bit more now.

And, it's within walking distance of our house. I sure hope it works out.

edited to add:

I've been thinking I need to contact Catholics for Choice to see what they know about the parish.

It's a one way street with them. The double standard issue is high priority when it comes to the bible and the christian teachings. The next time one of them as you a similar question, ask them right back, Are you 100% sure you're NOT going to hell for badgering me with that question???

And to the second tell him it is stated in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Gays are exalted onto God because they add peace to an otherwise hostile sex.

Or make something else up.

If they say it may be Satan talking tell them you had a dream last night that one of Satan's followers was going to try and convert you today. And then ask, "May I check for markings on your arm please?"

Or makeup something else.

They are just "concerned" for you! Are you so heartless?! :eyes:

Isn't it interesting that one can murder a gay person because "he may have tried to force himself on me!" But, if I murdered a fundie and claimed "Christian panic defense," I'd be laughed right into the gas chamber?!

Fundie motto: It is OK for me to force my beliefs on you, but if you "do unto me, as I have done unto you," I will scream persecution and smite you as it is my right!

Thankfully, I was raised a Jew. So when they say..."are you sure you are going to Heaven?" I always say "Yep! I am one of the "Chosen People." I am so sorry you have to work so hard!" And, if they happen to be an anti-Semite and bitch about Jews, I always say..."If it weren't for ONE Jew, we wouldn't be having this conversation!" Works every time!

ON EDIT: I forgot a word...I guess I am not so perfect after all!

25. All Christians are not the same.
People are allowed to say anything they want--even the nuts. And you're allowed to converse with them, ignore them or curse them out.

Wimping out & then coming online with the snappy comeback you forgot is a bit sad.

36. Interesting response
While I agree with your assertion that even "nuts" can say whatever they want, some might see what the OP experienced as a verbal assault. Then he made an honest comparison of situations, to which he was met with a less than compassionate response from you. We all have regrets and he was simply sharing his. Interestingly enough, some people don't believe it is appropriate to engage in a cursing match with another person in public. The OP does not malign a person by name, so no one is hurt by his frustrated post.

What I find sad, is that this person was not only verbally assaulted in person. He came here to express his concerns and was verbally assaulted again. That, is in fact sad.

Homosexuality is an ideology of evil-
Pope John Paul II's position on homosexuality only grewn more intransigent
and harsh over time. In his 2005 book Memory and Identity, John Paul labeled
homosexuality an "ideology of evil," saying when discussing gay marriage
that, "It is legitimate and necessary to ask oneself if this is not perhaps
part of a new ideology of evil, perhaps more insidious and hidden, which
attempts to pit human rights against the family and against man."

My stock answer to that question as I've been asked it many many times is, "I am absolutely 100% positive I am NOT going to heaven."

If they ar stupid enough to ask how I feel about that the stock answer is, "I'm ECSTATIC ABOUT IT!!!"

I guarantee you, they will leave you alone after that.

41. This is classic example of why DU Christians are feeling put off
You could have written your post using phrases like, "some Christians", but no, you had to lump them all into one monolithic block.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Christian, and have little reason to defend many of the practices of organized Christianity. But this is exactly what people talk about when they refer to Christians being bashed at DU.
