Get the feeling that Dems are being branded as godless Jesus haters?
The ugly trend is continuing, "you are either with us or against us!". rove has succeeded in coupling religion, bush and rw to the point where there isn't any turning back.

There *are* posters on DU who do not have good intentions for progressives and/or the Democratic Party. Some are paid.

that is fueling this perception. You don't have to search far in the posts to find evidence. Then those that want to paint us with the broad brush have "proof" of their claims.

now.

Sensible debate and reform are slapped down at the earliest opportunity.

3. This isn't particularly creative or believable.
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 08:00 PM by Heaven and Earth
Their new jihad for judges is like an aging one trick pony. After Schiavo, I can't believe this will have any mainstream credibility. Its like the Republicans have used religion for so long they have forgotten how to promote their message in any other way. I smell desperation and eventual failure. I predict Bill Frist will be a laughing stock if he goes through with this. The reason I am optimistic is that Frist isn't going to move unless momentum is on his side. Its why they have been wasting so much time trying to promote Bush's social security lack-of-plan, because they know they don't yet have the popularity and support to do it. Same thing with the Nuclear option. As long as they remain off-balance, they won't pull the trigger.

17. "The filibuster against faith — "---pretty stupid comment

.....Frist, a likely presidential contender in 2008 as well as the man charged with shepherding Bush's agenda through the Senate, is scheduled to make a brief videotaped speech at a rally on April 24 organized by the Family Research Council.

A flyer for the event, viewable on the group's Web site, shows a young man with a gavel in one hand and a Bible in the other and says, "He should not have to choose." Under the title "Justice Sunday," the flyer adds, "The filibuster against faith — the filibuster was once abused to protect racial bias, and now it is being used against people of faith."

11. I'm hoping you'll preach about Frist tomorrow Rev
Any sane preacher living in this country
should be telling his or her congregation
about what Frist et al is doing in the
name of their faith, about the Rapture,
the Dominionists in office, about faith
based monies going to only churches that
will do the political bidding of this administration.

It is really past time to say that
faith is a private matter between a person
and his or her God. It is not to be used
politically to divide, ostracize, catagorize,
make legislation on the back of.

It is really past time that sane religious
leaders spoke out clearly about what Jesus's
message was really about, not this anti-Christ
bullshit that passes for good news.

If you are not speaking out, you are part
of their plan, not God's.

22. Speaking of 'speaking out', an article by Gary Burge puts it simply
Christian Zionism, Evangelicals and Israel, by Gary M. Burge, Ph.D.
www.hcef.org/hcef/index.cfm/ID/159 - 31k

nails the main point, specifically their territorialism, which plays well with the 'settlers' movement in Israel.

"But the most important critique - and here I think we discover the Achilles' heel - is that Christian Zionism is committed to what I term a "territorial religion." It assumes that God's interests are focused on a land, a locale, a place. From a NT perspective, the land is holy by reference to what transpired there in history. But it no longer has an intrinsic part to play in God's program for the world. This is what Stephen pointed to in his speech in Acts 7. The land and the temple are now secondary. God's wishes to reveal himself to the entire world. And this insight cost Stephen his life. Such an understanding is a far cry from the views of Christian Zionists like Ed McAteer who recently commented, "Every grain of sand, every grain of sand between the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, and the Mediterranean Sea belongs to the Jews." Stephen would be alarmed."

He would also be alarmed at the lack of love these 'disciples' show their fellow man, fellow citizens, in the United States let alone the rest of the world.

26. I heard those same echoes years ago.
Remember Reagan's "America: That shining beacon on the hill"? That's taken from the Sermon on the Mount:

"You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp-stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)

It was brilliant, because it was subtle. But Christians heard it, and knew it was a biblical reference. To the Christian conservatives, America = the New Jerusalem.

36. speaking out...
Unfortunately, I don't think many of them are going to speak out about the way this administration is using religion to divide the people. I lost my faith in the basic goodness of people a long time ago. The problem is that those who live their faith don't speak out about those who use it as a tool. It's an understandable thing, but I really think the unwillingness of the those who live the faith is going to be the end of us.

I'm agnostic, tending towards atheist. Just seems to me sometime like the world is going insane. To any of you reading this..... Why? Why are people arguing over a deity which may or may not exist? Why can't you leave those of us who do not share your beliefs, to live our lives without the interference of your faith?

Bush the elder already stated he didn't think we were citizens, you think his son is not going to have the same view?

Those of you who live their faith, it's time for you folks to start standing up for what you know is right, and that is decrying the divisive tactics of those who believe in the dominionist/millenarian creed. You folks outnumber the vocal few on their side. If you let them get the best of you, then they'll start marginalizing you like they do the rest of us.

K.

43. there's actually more going on than you think
"progressive" Christians or the ones who
really try to live out Jesus's words and deeds
and know in what context the incarnate God
was living in under Roman empire rule,
somewhat similar to what is going on now...

anyway there are many discussions going
on and groups forming to address the
false and anti-Christian messages from
this administration and their pals.

Don't lose hope.

14. I've got news for them
I know A LOT of previous *Republicans* that have had it with having the religious stuff ala bush and his media pounded up their butts 24/7

Religion is a private matter and I truly believe that the normal public is sick of this holiness extravaganza.

The Republicans are approaching the level of the people that go door to door with their "watchtower publications" and "Amway plans"

23. "My Bible Is Not A Weapon"
I don't have a picture to post
but my homemade bumper sticker
has gotten a lot of comments.

Mostly people ask what I mean?
I quietly tell them I was raised Christian and
that I am tired of religious fanatics using the Bible as
a weapon to attack our Constitution, Government and the principles
of religious freedom.

When they ask "who's doing that?", I just say:
read the papers, watch TV news. Mostly its
Politicians, Ministers and "Talk Show" types who
use the Bible to condemn anyone who doesn't agree with them.

I never mention politics but most times it's
obvious which way they voted. Many Republican
types do admit it's gotten pretty bad.

IMHO, If every Democrat who owns a Bible put this bumper sticker
on their car/van/bike/SUV/butt or backpack, people might start seeing
those bible thumping lunatics on the right for what they are; DANGEROUS!!

It might also help the Democrats take back the "sane" Christians.

28. Today's NYTimes and the on-line Boston Globe both --
-- wrote lead-piece editorial condemnations of Senator Frist's (a.k.a. THE CAT BUTCHER ) upcoming buttkissing pandering smarmy ego-fueled appearance at the Family Research Council gig this coming weekend.

They called the man to task for taking the oath of his office on one hand and then betraying the separation of powers on the other. They really let him have it.

The tide is beginning to turn. Recent polls gathered by BuzzFlash suggest that most U.S. citizens do NOT want a theocracy and they are looking suspiciously at the nutcase Christian fundies and at the Republican asshats who are pandering to them.

The 2006 Congressional elections should be good news for us and not so good news for them.
