Saint Malachy Prophecy & Pope Benedict XVI... WHY this name?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prophecy_of_the_Popes

Everybody has heard of Saint Malachy's prophecy of the Popes and the destruction of the VAtican

We know that the Vatican respects Saint Malachy cause they made him a Saint.

But heres my question which is bugging the heck out of me!!! Please HELP!

If you were the Catholic Church and you knew about the Saint Malachy Prophecy wouldn't Saint Benedict be the farthest name you would pick!!!

111 Gloria olivae (The glory of the olive)

I mean St. Bernard of Clairveuz was a friend of Malachy's and brought back the St. Benedict's Laws which has connection with the Crusades and the Knights Templars

But the Name Pope Benedict clearly does fit him

from the article above

Yet there can also be a different meaning. Pope Benedict XVI had his birthday on April 16 and on that day is celebrated the feast of Saint Benedict Joseph Labrè (March 26, 1748 - April 16, 1783), also known as the Holy Pilgrim. His first name was already Joseph and together with Benedict, which he has now assumed, his Christian namesake is now complete. Moreover, the Order of St Benedict is also known as that of the Olivetans.

Alternatively, less specific interpreters have predicted that he will promote world peace (as in an olive branch). The late self-proclaimed Pope Clemente Domínguez y Gómez of the Palmarian Catholic Church used to claim that he was the glory of the olive.

There had already been, before the election of pope, a concomitance in two unrelated events occurring on the opening date of the 2005 Conclave. First, a Turkish presidential candidate won overnight the northern Cyprus elections favouring re-unification peace talks of the two sectors; the Cyprus flag has two inter-locking olive branches in it. Secondly, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was forced to resign and hold general elections early as a result of pressure from the leftist opposition called l'Ulivo.

So heres the question Why Benedict why not John Paul the III

???

its truly freaky!!!

1. No it's not. It's rather transparent.
In all religions there are those who are rather mystical in their beliefs. Signs, portents, prophesies...all are there to appeal to those who are looking for an external force in our lives, an over-arching paternal figure to protect and guide us.

This is to appeal to them. Consider how quickly the Malachy Prophesies were referenced. That is no coincidence. Then, the choosing of the reign name. No coincidence in that, either.

Sometimes a cigar is not just a cigar, but then, it kinda is just a cigar, ya' know?

2. Here's my guess, only a guess
Benedictus 15 was a guy who tried to bring peace to Europe during WW1. This new Pope wants to bring increasingly secular (and wealthy) Europe back into the fold, and persuade them to open their wallets. The Vatican is running some big deficits.

It is also a homage to the Benedictines, who run, among other monestaries, the one at Monte Cassino (of film fame), where this new Pope used to go on retreats, often, to think and clear his head, during his time in the Vatican (virtually the entire Papacy of JP2). He was known to stay at other Benedictine monestaries as well, but Cassino was his favorite.

Finally, taking JP3 would have been viewed as presumptuous. JP2 took the name because everyone LOVED JP1, the smiling Pope, who only lasted 33 days. They took it as a signal that he would continue in JP1's shoes--that didn't happen. The first JP was very progressive, and when JP2 took the name, it was perceived as a humble gesture, a homage of sorts. If Benedictus 16 took the name JP3, it would be viewed as a bit of 'high horse' attitude, I suspect.

10. He really, really respects them
They've obviously had a huge influence on his life. And I do think the work of the last Benedict, who admittedly was not as effective as he wanted to be though his heart was in the right place, had some influence. This one has predicted a short Papacy, I think he knows his role in the big scheme of things, and if he's right, and it is a short reign, he will be alot like 15.

But only he knows for sure why he chose the name. He just may let us in on it one day.

3. What's in a name?...........
All I believe is what can be verified by scientific method, with one exeption...love. I believe in it, and it's power, but can't come up with an explanation for it. My question is what's on Benedict the 16ths MP3 player? Ave Maria for sure, by Aaron Neville, Karen Carpenter or Haifetz. How about maybe...Wagner? (sorry about that) *makes the sign of the cross and rubs a surge protector*

7. In the Catholic religion the Name is very symbolic!!!
Look all over the vatican the symbolism is every where and in the Catholic Faith there is confirmation where you declare your Catholic name

So whats in a name ...its who you are and what ideals you want to promote in your life!!!

14. I've also never believed in....
symbolism. Our flag for instance, is a piece of dyed cloth. Mr. J. Campbell is entertaining, nothing more IMO. I wouldn't put a fish on my bumper or a yellow ribbon either.

Did pope choose name
to fulfill prophecy?
Catholic scholar: 'Benedict' a reference to protecting Rome from Germans

Rather than purposely choosing the name Benedict to fulfill a 12th-century prophecy about the papacy, the new pope chose his moniker as a reference to sixth-century St. Benedict and his quest to protect Rome from invading German pagans, a Catholic scholar and writer says, claiming the pontiff hopes to protect the modern-day Church from destructive philosophies that originated in Germany.

Mary Jo Anderson told WorldNetDaily she is not impressed with those who point to the prophecy of St. Malachy as having been further fulfilled with the election of Pope Benedict XVI.

So the WorldNet doesn't think it had anything to do with the Prophecy either!!!

17. Perhaps the Catholic Church is like the Dominionists ...
... and trying to fulfill prophecy to bring about the "end times."

At least that's the latest conspiracy theory I've heard from Ratzinger taking a name that seems to fulfill the Malachian prophecy.
