Poll question: Suicide and religion
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 03:15 AM by Behind the Aegis
Yet another religion thread not in the underbelly of DU, BUT...I would like for people to see this. This is General Discussion and religion has been big in the news recently. Another poster told of a tragic story of a young person who killed himself because he was gay and guilt induced by religion. So, I wondered; how many people here contemplated suicide because of their religious beliefs? I am going to single out gay people here a little bit, but I am interested in all opinions and thoughts. Also, since voting in a poll doesn't "kick" a thread, if someone could 'kick' every so often I would appreciate it! :)

GLBTQI = gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, questioning, intersexual

H = heterosexual

ON EDIT: Spell check doesn't check the poll questions?! That is rotted!

4. Yes and no
It can refer to hermaphrodites or those who feel there is no sex to match their gender. It is really interesting, but some what confusing.

3. It is called "other"
I put "other" in there for those who the idea of suicide never occurred to them, for those who are not religious/spiritual but have thought of suicide, or those who don't "fit" into the 8 choices! :)

5. 'Other'
The reason that I have never contemplated killing myself is because i derive too much fun out of making republicans look bad.

9. Thanks!!!
I had a few others to add, but 10 is the limit! Damn! I wanted to add a few more that would include those who are not religious/spiritual and a few other reasons (like religion and something else played a role). I appreciate your vote and response! :)

11. I am afraid of death
To spend an eternity being tortured for making the wrong choice in salvific creeds ... little wonder this era has strongly rejected religion.

I even have the "correct" sexuality. And all I have to look forward to is forever in the flames.

12. I think everyone has "thought" about suicide...
I think about it and death in general from time to time for no real reason.

IMO I dont think much of people who commit suicide for trivial reasons, which IMO are most reasons.

I think its understandable to commit suicide if you are doing something noble like saving someone else's life, or if you are already dying and just want to get it over with.

But I think people who kill themselves because, OMG I had my feelings hurt and people hate me, well thats just darwin in action.

13. Back in the day
when I was a believer I hit a spot in my life where I was filled with despair. The only reason I didn't seriously consider suicide was because the nuns had taught me that it was the only sin that could not be forgiven. The claim was you couldn't be forgiven because a.) you assumed the role of God and b.) you weren't around to be sorry for it and therefore forgiven.

14. People who commit suicide don't want to die. They don't want to live.
Life becomes too tricky, uncomfortable, painful, threatening, you name it.

As a counselor, I worked with a number of people who threatened suicide. For the most part, they had hit bumps in the road that seemed to be, at the moment, insurmountable only because they didn't want to change their bahavior. Once a way out of their dillema was found, usually something quite simple, they decided to face the music (whatever it was) and just live through it.

Most people (over 90% of adults) have considered suicide as a way to deal with problems that seem too difficult to deal with.

On the one hand suicide is the ulitimate expression of "freedom". On the other, it is ultimate expression of self-pity, selfishness, and egomania.

15. I've never contemplated suicide.
No matter how bad things get, they always eventually improve with a very few exceptions and even those don't warrant suicide.

16. Never
I guess I should have put "Never thought about it as an option." I had no idea so many 'never' thought or considered it. I have always been taught that it was fairly natural to think about suicide as an extension of thinking about death. My bad! :)
