Sometimes, ok, most times, DU exhibits the "Droopy" snydrome
Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 08:50 PM by CatWoman
as in, "Oh, Dear; Oh, My; It'll Never Work".............

A lot of times people post good ideas/stories, only for the Droopy contingent to immediately go into the naysayer mode.

It's real annoying.

4. Its human nature. Not just DU
Its actually exasterbated in forums of this type. The problem is that human nature tends to be more likely to react vocally to things that irritate it rather than give voice when there is something they agree with. That is we are quicker to complain than we are to compliment.

Strong or good ideas will often flash up on forums such as this. If they are well worded and get the point across then there will maybe be a small clutch of thumbs up or kicks. But over time the post will sink to the bottom and then away from view.

Meanwhile contentious issues that cause a great many forms of disagreement will be kept afloat because so many want to get a word in on why they disagree with other views or they want to add their own view. This pegs the volitale threads to the top of the page for days on end.

Human nature amplified by technology. Its not just DU.

5. One of my supervisors
told me about trained fleas. You put them in a jar with the cover on; they jump up and bump their heads. Then it's safe to take the cover off, because they are trained to think it's dangerous to jump.

out of the way of those who CAN.

This is the sort of thing that really pisses me off big time.

Are working through sadness, pain, frustration and fear. Sometimes, when you are doing that, you say and do things that are...inappropriate.

These are hard times right now.

19. Then how about...
Say nothing!!! It always works for me. There are times when I want to piss on a few stories around here and I keep my mouth shut so that those who are working hard won't have me to discourage them. It must hurt to work hard on something only to have your efforts immediately dismissed by people you thought would be in your corner.

Some people confuse constant negativity with "honesty". I've been
guilty of this myself, especially when I was younger.

is planted disruptors assigned to keep DU from being an even more effective progressive resource.

Of course, I'm also paranoid.

28. A quick scan says they are on vacation......Good for them...
But, what if they are negotiating to sell DU off? Did anyone ever think that they might just be tired of it all...the fights, squabbles...having to be the school "Principal?"

Maybe they just needed to give themselves some space....or it could be the worst scenario.

I think he just needed a well-deserved break from the lunacy and infighting.

I CAN imagine why he would want to sell it off.

Maybe he just has some family problems that are taking up his time, too.
It's hard to know. Imagine he will tell us at some point.

15. I agree . . .I have vowed to point out what I call
"damp cloth" posts. (Posts that have the potential to discourage people from taking action.)

I suspect "trolls" are behind most of the discouraging posts that appear moments after someone posts a call to action.

It helps to keep other DUers aware of that fact.

Thanks for posting your observation.

Edited on Sun Apr-24-05 09:10 PM by G_j
-yeah, yeah, I know, it will NEVER happen.

I don't care, I STILL would love to see it on bumper stickers and hear it shouted from rooftops!

War Tax resistance?

-it. won't work, it's stupid and why take the risk?

Never mind that a substantial number of people refused to pay their phone taxes during the Vietnam war.

just a few examples of subjects it is hard to even have a discussion about because of the syndrome you mention.

That way he can NEVER be pardoned.

I've got one of those on my car. One of those big yellow ones stickers.
They were selling them at the antiwar demos a couple of years ago, but
I haven't seen any of those really big ones since.

It doesn't work if you have any assets the IRS can get their tentacles on.
You just run up a bunch of interest and penalties, and you end up
paying them even MORE.
If you have a home or any other assets, the best form of tax
resistance is to have a good accountant.

I wonder what would happen if a whole lot more people
scrupulously filed every possible schedule that was applicable to them,
even if it were only for a dollar or so -- all completely legal, of
course, but the IRS wold have to process it all. Some of the less
common schedules may have to be done by hand. They can barely keep up
with the volume they have now.

25. One way we can fight the problem is to avoid posting on threads

that really don't have any constructive reason for existing in political forums, i.e., they're off-topic and belong in another forum or group. (I don't, of course, mean this thread -- or the one I just posted, that attempt to show what's wrong with this place at present.)

ok, my first potentially flammable post. I'm ready.
