Question for those who have used hotjobs/monster
I regularly go through these looking for jobs for my husband. I kind of weed them out since he doesn't have time to. He sends out resume after resume and never even gets a phone call. My question is this: Did anyone out there ever have any luck with finding a job via these sites or should we just forget it? His resume was recently updated with the help of a friend who is an exec. in HR. He is totally against using a recruiter because in the past he has been promised the world by head hunters and has never even got an interview from one. The last one he reluctantly met with wanted us to PAY HIM for finding him a job! In the meantime, we are grateful that he has a job now, but he really doesn't like it and sometimes it makes him rather crabby at home. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :hi:

2. Not much..
Mostly commission sales or telemarketing scams. I did get one bite from my field (insurance), but it was a dud.

3. It's very rare that anyone ever gets a job on Monster
I don't know why that is, except that maybe so many people apply and most businesses use more than monster to promote their job. You're probably better off getting the name of the company and writing them directly, I know people who do that and they get much better results.

4. Try your local paper. Generally they have an "online" service
to check for jobs.

Ours is career builder and it's far more reputable.

Good luck!

5. We use that too.
Thanks for your advice. Maybe it's just that there are no engineering jobs to be had, or 500 people apply to one ad?

9. Just saw this reply and want to tell you
that Lockheed-Martin needs engineers really badly. Search the site for a facility near you.

Uck, that sounded like a commercial - sorry.:bounce:

7. I landed my current job through Monster
A HR person for the company I just started working for found my resume on Monster and called me. I landed a few interviews from from companies that had openings posted on line so I would say that they can be a valuable resource but it is definitely a numbers game. You've got to figure that for every job you are applying for there are potentially thousands of other people applying for it too. It is very hard to stand out in the crowd.

8. There's a link on Monster that gives you key words to use
in your resume. It works! My husband has been a contractor for 6 years now & we haven't had health ins. for 5 (but that's another story). Before he changed his resume using these key words, he was lucky to get one hit in 6 months. After he changed it, he was getting 3 or 4 hits a week. Now he's been working at Lockheed-Martin for 6 months, had 2 interviews for a perm position and it looks like he'll get it any day now. I know, Lockheed-Martin isn't the best place to be if you're a liberal, but what the hell.

I don't know where this link is, just have your hub search the site for resume help. It's worth a try. Tell him good luck.

12. I think it was on Obermann I saw a report
that on CareerBuilders, they list jobs that are not available at the time, but "could be" in the future and they are building up a bank of resumes in case they need them. As for Monster, I heard a girl in a local store telling someone she just landed a job, through Monster. ...me no calls from either, but from the local sites and some of the smaller ones I have had calls (just didn't like the companies, once I got there for interviews, told them I made a mistake and didn't even stay for interview). Hotjobs, no calls, haven't heard anything about from anyone.

15. he is a sales engineer
for a tool and die company. We are in IL but willing to relocate if we have to. Right now he works directly with Delphi/div. of GM. His company makes them parts for cars. He deals with all the BS that goes along with it and fixes the mistakes along the way. He has brought in new contracts to the tune of $65 mil over the next 5 years. But he really thinks the tool & die industry will eventually die out. There have been so many companies closing their doors, including the one he worked for for 17 years (he left there 2 years ago.)

14. I went to an interview yesterday through Monster
I posted my resume.

I have been out of work for two years. During that time I have had my resume posted (without personal details) on several job websites. I have gotten email inquiries from anon to send different companies my resume, but most of the time, the job is nowhere near a reasonable commute for me. (More than two hours a day is not good for me.)

Last week one hit. I had my phone interview, and a personal interview. It is a good company. The irony is that I have applied to this company several times through Monster and have never had any luck. I also gave my resume to an employee to give to HR -- with no luck.

I have gone to several of the Job websites to apply to jobs that looked promising, but never had a bite on any of the ones I applied to. I have spent countless hours writing cover letters to go with my resumes -- all for naught. I had given up and was getting ready to change directions in my carreer. I may still have to do that if this one doesn't pan out.

Tell him not to quit his day job, but there is hope that it may still work for him.

16. He can't quit his day job!!
Even if he wanted to. I only work part time. Our youngest is almost 3 and I really don't want to go back full time until he is in school all day. It wouldn't make sense for me to give 3/4 of what I could make to a day care center. Good luck! I hope you get the job!

17. I had good luck with Monster.
Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 12:26 AM by Avalon Sparks
I found three jobs on Monster. I got interviews and offered the job.

One in July 2002.

Two in April 2003.

One thing I did was revise and tweak my resume for each job I applied for. I had a semi-custom resume for every job.

In 2002 between mid March thru June I got called for 3 or maybe 4 interviews, out of about 55 resumes sent out via email, with custom cover letters in the email. I got a job at the end of June.

In 2003 I send out 30 or so resumes in a month and got called for 2 interviews - both of which I got the job. I actually accepted one (after going through three interviews to get it) and that same day I got the call to interview for the second job. I had another three interviews for that job... but I got it and I had been working for a week at the first job and had to quit, because I was more excited about the second job offer.

I think that my secret basically was that I worked on and worked on my resume until I believe I had the most perfectly worded and graphically pleasant resume possible. I also had excellent cover letters. Great references and an accurate salary history, also. I looked at several books and web sites regarding resumes and cover letter and tailored mine to fit the jobs I was applying for. I also used job descriptions taken FROM Monster to help perfect my resume.

I was looking for jobs in Business Analyst, Computer/Technical Sales (inside), and E-Commerce.

For the interviews I had three different interviewing suits that I kept immaculate, I had my hair and nails done (money well spent), and I took a briefcase with samples of work I had done and reference letters. I also practiced answering the typical and not so typical interview questions gathered from several books on interviewing techniques.... I never, ever tried to 'wing it'...

Additionally I researched as much information about the company as I could before the interview, and most of the people I interviewed were suprised that I had done so when I answered knowledgebly (sp) about how I could be an asset to their business.

Lastly, I told myself over and over "Bitch, you will get this job!"

Good Luck to you and your hubby!

18. Worked for me
I found my job through Monster. Took me about 6 months, 12 if you count the time that I was with my previous employer.

But it's only one channel. Don't give up on newspapers, networking, open calls and letters, etcetera. I found being unemployed to be a lot of work.

22. Not a single phone call
Not a single interview. I even paid one alleged job-hunting site $60 to present my credentials before their alleged list of contacts who were hiring. Nothing. Not a bite.

23. Don't pay head hunters.
- The head hunter gets your money whether you get a job or not. They have no incentive to do anything for you after they get your money. Employers would only pay if the head hunter found them an employee.

- If the company is worth working for, they will pay the head hunters. A company that lets the job seeker pay, probably won't have benefits or be a very good place to work.
You didn't cost them anything, so you are disposable. They can throw you away and pick up the next sucker.

- I don't like head hunters. The worst job I ever had in my life was through a head hunter. Other head hunters frequently sent me on wild goose chases to interview for jobs that were not suitable to me. They had a quota to send to the employer and they met it whether the people were qualified, over qualified or unqualified. I'm sure there are some good ones, I just never encountered any.
