CSPAN Thursday morning — Debating evolution
Last caller: It takes more faith to believed "something is created from nothing." A cake doesn't appear out of nowhere. It needs a baker, like God who created everything.

Can you spot the logical flaws in this? Not to worry, have a blessed day.

1. Great!
The sooner we get rid of evolution, the sooner we can get on to my bugboo - gravity! I hates it, I do! It doesn't exist!

The crazy fundies were just waiting for an opportunity like this.

I wish someone would call and mention that the UK has a portrait of Darwain on one of the pound notes. I wonder what the fundies would say then, especially since so many of them think that the only "real" Americans came from the UK and Ireland.

:scared: :hide: :eyes:

19. Maybe we should tell them that he's buried there and on the money too
whenever we get into a discussion about evolution vs. creationsim.

I grew up in an upper middle class Presbyterian family. We never were taught (or even ever discussed) in school or in church that evolution and the Bible were in conflict. School and science were separate from church and Sunday school.

I had no exposure to the crazy fundies until I went to university. Apparently, some students from rural areas of the state were offended by the teaching of evolution in college level biology classes. I was gobsmacked. Why did they attend the State University? Why didn't they go to Bible college?

4. Can't watch it - I might explode.
Of course spontaneous combustion would be God's will right? Why is it these people don't believe they have a choice about their own lives? I was reading comments in a newsletter about an Alaskan trip people had taken. One person said "It was the most fascinating trip I have ever taken and I will do it again, God willing."

See, I don't understand. If it's a matter of bankrolling another trip like that and the economy is sinking, wouldn't that be more like "Bush willing" not God? It's kind of pathetic that people give over their own free will to some imaginary God.

5. It's so simple!
Man just set me straight. Evolution disproven in three easy questions:
Do monkeys share same DNA as man?
Can you get a blood transfusion from a monkey?
If man evolved from monkeys, why do we still have monkeys?

I am not a monkey. I am a MAN!

6. The only answers to that gibberish is to ask them a few...
1. Do you still stone children as a form of punishment?
2. Do you touch pigskin?
3. Do you wear clothing made of two different threads?

Funny how they pick and choose.

we have a monkey in the whitehouse, so at least one monkey has evolved enough to speak, albeit poorly.

"No one was around to see evolution happen"

"I believe that creationism should be taught at the college level." - woman History Professor at the Univ. of Mass.

"If man evolved from monkeys why are monkeys still around?"

10. Does that "professor" also think Ghost Busters should be
taught at the college level.........in SCIENCE CLASS AS FACT?

Or how about Voodoo?

Let's see. How would the first chapter be written about God taking Adam's rib to create Eve? What would the slide show look like? Can she recreate that in the lab?

17. These Intelligent Design/Creationist professors have invaded academia.
At UGA, there is a good size group of them. Many of them are science professors I believe that one of them works at the Complex Carbohydrates Research Center. UGA has a world class reputation in many fields (including mine) and I hope that these crazies don't drag us into the academic and research mud, as it were.

22. Well, Darwinists Are Dishonest In Their Attempt To Pretend That The Theory
Edited on Thu May-05-05 08:36 AM by cryingshame
they espouse isn't rooted just as firmly in a philosophy.

Darwinism IS rooted in Materialism.

It cannot account for how Consciousness arises from Physical Matter.

And yet it wants to assert that physical matter is, in fact, all that is necessary for Evolution to occur.

And its perfectly valid to posit the notion that there is some form on innate Consciousness or Intelligence within Nature that both gives rise to Physical Matter and plays a role in Evolution.

Just because SOME theorists go too far and assert the existance of some sky-Being/puppetmaster doesn't mean ALL do.

28. Not this again.
You know what? Evolution is rooted in observation.

Consciousness coming from physical matter is not.

Your posts on this are fine for philosophy, just like religion, but natural selection is science.

18. none of these "pro-creationism" callers
have the slightest idea about what evolution is. If you can't explain the theory of evolution, how can you talk about it at all?

Right "intelligent design" is just a wedge to get religion into public schools.

21. They don't want to understand evolution.
Many local public schools in rural GA don't discuss evolution beyond mentioning that it is a theory. That's it. They may not discuss creationism to avoid legal problems but they don't elaborate on evolution or scientific theory either.

This is a true anecdote from a co-worker who attended a nearby high school in a rural area.

20. Yes, Poor Argument. BUT, Consciousness Doesn't Arise From Physical Matter
Edited on Thu May-05-05 08:31 AM by cryingshame
and that's what Darwinism espouses as a theory. Having no proof or evidence to back this up.

DU'ers really need to get a grip and realise that Darwinism IS based in Materialism and is not the only scientifically valid theoretical framework.

24. I do "have a grip" and I have no problem separating science and religion
when discussing scientific theory and research techniques.

Science is explained by theories which are proven by facts.

Religion is based on faith not facts.

Never the twain shall meet nor should they.

26. Darwinism=Materialism?????

Evolution encompasses more than just darwinian concepts. Darwin was a naturalist not a materialist so...I don't get how you would equate Darwinism with Materialism.

So many labels and so little time it seems...

Remember what the late comedian Bill Hicks said:

"Did you ever notice that people who believe in Creationism look really unevolved?"
