Band Banned From Performing 'Louie Louie'
Unfreakin' believable! This crap is still going on!

Band Banned From Performing 'Louie Louie'

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- A pop culture controversy that has simmered for decades came to a head when a middle school marching band was told not to perform "Louie Louie."

Benton Harbor Superintendent Paula Dawning cited the song's allegedly raunchy lyrics in ordering the McCord Middle School band not to perform it in Saturday's Grand Floral Parade, held as part of the Blossomtime Festival.

In a letter sent home with McCord students, Dawning said "Louie Louie" was not appropriate for Benton Harbor students to play while representing the district - even though the marching band wasn't going to sing it. LINK

Ahem.

Louie, Louie,
me gotta go.
Louie, Louie,
me gotta go.

A fine little girl, she wait for me;
me catch a ship across the sea.
I sailed the ship all alone;
I never think I'll make it home

Three nights and days we sailed the sea;
me think of girl constantly.
On the ship, I dream she there;
I smell the rose in her hair.

Me see Jamaica moon above;
It won't be long me see me love.
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again.

3. Man... Are these people stuck in the '50s or what!
Louie Louie? For crying out loud!

I can't believe it...

<shaking head>

Just can't believe it.

It makes me wonder just how long Paula Dawning has been
holding this grudge... Now, finally she has THE POWAH! to
act in her pompous crusade.

I'll be sure to pray for her on this National Day of Prayer.

Louie, Louie is the theme song of the MOB (Marching Owl Band)--the highly unorthodox group that accompanies Rice University's teams to games. Unless they're still barred from College Station--one MOB performance was disrespectful to Aggie Tradition.

The FBI wasted 2 years and Gods' alone know how much in taxpayer money to investigate the lyrics of a song? I know J. Edgar was a weirdo, but this has got to show that he was not just around the bend, but over the tracks, down in the valley and across the river.

18. Well, it's not the best English, and if you're a school....well,....
But I thought this has been a standard for decades? Wasn't this song featured in "Animal House," and haven't we heard it from time to time at sports events? Why this controversy?

In our house, when we barbeque, my family and I listen to a variety of tunes, including Harry Belfonte singing "Kingston Town":

Down the way
Where the nights are gay
And the sun shines brightly
On the mountain top

I took a trip
On a sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica
I made a stop

But I'm sad to say,
I'm on my way
Won't be back
For many a day

My heart is down
My head is turning 'round
Had to leave a little girl
In Kingston town.

Down in the market
You can hear
Ladies cry out as
On their heads the bear

'Ackee rice
And fish on ice
And the rum is good
Any time of year.

But I'm sad to say,
I'm on my way
Won't be back
For many a day

My heart is down
My head is turning 'round
Had to leave a little girl
In Kingston town.

Kinda similar to "Louie, Louie." Maybe I'm a bad parent? :scared:

20. So funny.
If they don't sing it, it could be a dozen different songs. BTW, one of my favorite novelty albums (and there's a volume 2.) I just saw the words for Louie, Louie written out for the first time, and I'm old enough to remember the original.

31. The same problem with "Louie Louie" happened in 64!!!!! Funny!!
Look at the Smoking Gun site on this issue. In 1964-65 people complained about "Louie Louie" and there was an FBI investigation. Parents were so outraged at the disgusting lyrics (LOL!!) that the FBI studied the song. The end result after listening to the song over and over and over, "You can't prosecute what you can't hear."

A federal investigation and several FBI agents could not determine what the song lyrics were.

You gotta see the site. There's some hilarious letters from outraged, holier than thou parents who seem to have projected their own sick stuff into these lyrics. The lyrica are totally benign!!

A final quote from the article:

"Louie Louie," written by Richard Berry in 1956, is one of the most recorded songs in history. The best-known, most notorious version was a hit in 1963 for the Kingsmen; the FBI spent two years investigating the lyrics before declaring they not only were not obscene but also were "unintelligible at any speed."

But did they try to run it backwards????

I love it. Let the nutjobs continue to attack popular culture. The random malcontent -- Texas and its cheerleaders issue is becoming one of the biggest jokes of all time. Let's add in Louie Louie.
