Adding to his legacy, chimp gets confused - celebrates Cuatro de Mayo

WASHINGTON - President Bush said he likes to use the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo to practice his Spanish, but this year he's practicing his arithmetic.

Bush poked fun at himself in front of about 200 people gathered in the Rose Garden for the White House celebration on May 4, one day before the holiday marking the Mexican troops' defeat of a French army on May 5, 1862.

"My only problem this year is I scheduled the dinner on cuatro de mayo," Bush said. "Next year I'm going to have to work on my math."

2. Ah yes, more attempts by Bush to turn his idiocy into charm....
This is clearly some tactic they are working--Laura's comedy routine the
other day, etc.

I guess if they convince us he's cuddly we'll forget the blood on his hands.

5. This one does sound kinda funny.
His evil notwithstanding, the man does occasionally read a script with a touch of real wit. His attempts at humor usually fall flat, but maybe this quip was the rare exception?

3. What other State "leader" publicizes his stupidity
Even if he's trying to be funny, he just doesn't get the fact that he is one of the most loathed people around.

4. Where's the math?
Where's the comedy? It doesn't make sense. Who uses math to check the dates on a calender. He should have checked his translation, should have checked his calender, etc.

Not funny, just stupid. But I'm sure he got an "appreciative chuckle" from the screened audience members.

6. When he was running against Gore
Gore said something about Cinco de Mayo being Mexican Independence Day, which it's not - most people make that mistake. Cinco de Mayo is the day that a much smaller, poorly-equipped Mexican army drove the French out of Puebla, Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo was pretty much a Hispanic-pride celebration created in America that has, of course, been hijacked by the beer companies. It's not celebrated as much in Mexico.

Bush couldn't wait to get in front of a camera to show off his bona fides to the Hispanic community by correcting Gore (you could see how excited he was) and telling his interviewer that "Dieciseis de Septiembre" was Mexico's Independence Day. The interviewer asked what that translated into, and Bush said, "Fifteenth of September."

It actually translates into Sixteenth of September. So he got the date right in Spanish but screwed up the translation.
