IMPEACHMENT TIME: "FACTS WERE FIXED."
Thursday, May 5, 2005

By Greg Palast

Here it is. The smoking gun. The memo that has "IMPEACH HIM" written all over it.

The top-level government memo marked "SECRET AND STRICTLY PERSONAL," dated eight months before Bush sent us into Iraq, following a closed meeting with the President, reads, "Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

Read that again: "The intelligence and facts were being fixed...."

For years, after each damning report on BBC TV, viewers inevitably ask me, "Isn't this grounds for impeachment?" -- vote rigging, a blind eye to terror and the bin Ladens before 9-11, and so on. Evil, stupidity and self-dealing are shameful but not impeachable. What's needed is a "high crime or misdemeanor."

And if this ain't it, nothing is.

The memo uncovered this week by the Times, goes on to describe an elaborate plan by George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to hoodwink the planet into supporting an attack on Iraq knowing full well the evidence for war was a phony.

A conspiracy to commit serial fraud is, under federal law, racketeering. However, the Mob's schemes never cost so many lives.

2. kick...I love Palast...seeing bush impeached and imprisoned would
be the greatest thing that could happen for the safety and security of our whole world.

but it ain't gonna happen. unless:

1. The country gets its conscience back

2. Dems get control of house and senate.

12. You're right unfortunately. If only repubs cared about law and
accountability. But they will have to know that the Dems/progressives side will be thinking 'I told you so'...

(Krikey, even GHWBush knew better than to dump the 'Powell Doctrine')

Palast is my favorite reporter. I wish we could do something but sadly I doubt he'd ever be held accountable. *sigh*

10. Yes! I was totally glued to the television for hours.
I don't know why people complain about corporate news? CNN did a great job covering those events.

I was hoping that there were any Reps. anywhere that may have signed on. Really I just want every group possible to get in on this. In your opinion, is that the most comprehensive collection of folks?

27. I don't know, go to Google and type "Impeach Bush"
It sure is a popular topic on Google.

One of the people on here back in February said they got an email from their Rep (Alcee Hastings) and he actually said some members of Congress were discussing impeachment. I know there are a lot of Republicans in there who are fed up with this administration. Maybe it's not that they don't have the votes, it's just they haven't figured out how they'll go about approaching it.

17. Distinctions Distinctions. There are journalists who will uncover and
write about these things that are essential to our constitution and bill of rights - the problem isn't journalists, the problem is controlled corporate limited dissemination of their findings.

We shouldn't knock all the journalists. The problem is breaking through the corporate-WH propaganda wall.

We have to let everyone we know or talk to how limited their knowledge is when they depend on mainstream corporations only. We need to have some examples ready and a short list of alternative resources that we all know about. Vary the recommendations between scholarly on the one end and 'emotional' on the other to suit the person you're educating. *

We must keep asking, reminding, demanding MSM and Washington Journal that they owe us truth. They must hear from us that we see through their narrow list of guest experts and propaganda artists, that we're not going to buy their propaganda. That the crimes of this administrations are coming out of the bag and something has to be done.

* Making a distinction between scholarly and (what I call) emotional is very important. If someone needs to make recommendations to someone who leans toward the scholarly...there is Zinn. We might not want to mention Malloy (only). We might want to turn them on to Free Speech TV and include Air America, with a caveat. We now seem to be getting more people out there for a wide range of audiences. There are all kinds of distinguishable sources. We can each make a list to hand them with our own recommendations based on who we expect to hand it to. Then, ask them to join us in asking MSMs to do what they are supposed to do.

Memo: Bush made intel fit Iraq policy

By WARREN P. STROBEL and JOHN WALCOTT

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - A highly classified British memo, leaked in the midst of Britain's just-concluded election campaign, indicates that President Bush decided to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by summer 2002 and was determined to ensure that U.S. intelligence data supported his policy.

The document, which summarizes a July 23, 2002

Blair is not going to get off the hook. That has to have an affect on Bush. This is damning. We knew it then. That's why we marched. Now, they can claim it's a fake; They can ignore it; But it isn't going to go away. They fucked up the world, and now they're going to pay.

,...wtf was going on. That bs was the smoking gun and there has been one smoking gun after another since.

A huge storm is brewing against these neo-imperialist schemers. They may have inadvertently incited the final blow to future imperialistic endeavors, whether direct or by proxy or otherwise. They are almost alone in a world that has been building a base against any more empires. They will lose,...big!!!

46. CHIMPEACH! "The intelligence and facts were being fixed...."
Bush is a traitor.

The secret Downing Street memo

SECRET AND STRICTLY PERSONAL - UK EYES ONLY

DAVID MANNING
From: Matthew Rycroft
Date: 23 July 2002
S 195 /02

cc: Defence Secretary, Foreign Secretary, Attorney-General, Sir Richard Wilson, John Scarlett, Francis Richards, CDS, C, Jonathan Powell, Sally Morgan, Alastair Campbell

IRAQ: PRIME MINISTER'S MEETING, 23 JULY

Copy addressees and you met the Prime Minister on 23 July to discuss Iraq.

SNIP...

C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.

CDS said that military planners would brief CENTCOM on 1-2 August, Rumsfeld on 3 August and Bush on 4 August.

The two broad US options were:

(a) Generated Start. A slow build-up of 250,000 US troops, a short (72 hour) air campaign, then a move up to Baghdad from the south. Lead time of 90 days (30 days preparation plus 60 days deployment to Kuwait).

(b) Running Start. Use forces already in theatre (3 x 6,000), continuous air campaign, initiated by an Iraqi casus belli. Total lead time of 60 days with the air campaign beginning even earlier. A hazardous option.

The US saw the UK (and Kuwait) as essential, with basing in Diego Garcia and Cyprus critical for either option. Turkey and other Gulf states were also important, but less vital. The three main options for UK involvement were:

SNIP...

The Defence Secretary said that the US had already begun "spikes of activity" to put pressure on the regime. No decisions had been taken, but he thought the most likely timing in US minds for military action to begin was January, with the timeline beginning 30 days before the US Congressional elections.
