Abu Ghraib's Pfc. England, civilian (pro bono) lawyer split

Pfc. Lynndie England and the Denver civilian attorney representing her abruptly parted ways just one day after a mistrial was declared in her prisoner abuse trial.

Rick Hernandez said Thursday the "mutual" parting was driven by financial reasons, and that England and her family were pleased with his work — which drew criticism after she and her former lover gave wobbly performances on the stand.

"We're at the point where we're either going to salvage the plea agreement or start from scratch," Hernandez said. "We've been on it for a year pro bono and none of our expenses are paid, so we couldn't afford to start that from scratch."

It was "very amicable and everything was fine, it's with Lynndie's blessing, and she knows we're there to support her if she needs anything from us," he said. A military attorney on the team, Capt. Jonathan Crisp, now will handle England's defense.
