Anyone heard anymore reliable dope on this?
The US print media (Times, I think) reported the other week that two US soldiers (of at least field grade) were arrested by Columbian authorities for dealing arms to Right-wing Columbian paramilitary groups. (Who have, incidentally, been officially classified by the U.S. as terrorist organizations.) Thing is, Columbia has an agreement with the US which extends immunity from criminal prosecution to all US officials, not just US diplomats. (I wonder why Columbia ever felt compelled to agree to such an arrangement? Weird, eh?) Thus, the two offenders have already been handed over to US custody, and may have already left the country. This has led a couple of notable Columbian elected officials to call for a re-examination of this arrangement, and for a Columbian investigation and trial of the two individuals.
Question: Is this or is this not straight out of the playbook of Right-wing US Administrations past? Running arms to the a group which it publicly has classified as terrorist, because said group is seen as furthering US interests; could anyone put this past the W. Administration?
