How do "hot" posts suddenly go "cold"?

Can someone help me understand how a post can receive tumultuous response, with subject line responses such as "Great letter!", "Outstanding", "EXCELLENT!", "Excellent!" & "Viva Media Matters!!!!" and 7 "greatest" nominations over a matter of an hour or so, then go cold, with no responses at all.

The post itself does not change, it must be something else.

With 3 or more nominations, it gets additional exposure on the "greatest" page.

My thinking is

1. People are not scanning the "greatest" page for the best peer-nominated posts.
2. Once any post leaves a forum's first page it is often times bound for the archives. People rarely go to the second or subsequent page.

Inquiring minds want to know. :shrug:

1. Probably both. It is frustrating to see great posts sink into

oblivion. Maybe people are less likely to post replies to threads on the Greatest page, if they don't lend themselves to snappy one-line responses? :shrug:

3. Yes, that is another phenomenon.

Once a post has 3 "greatest" votes, the often responses die and it "plateaus".
