4. I haven't been feeling patriotic since 1961.
I was a 17 year old in marine boot camp attending one of those rah-rah classes about why we should kill people.

A captain stood there and screamed at us that we should be all fired up to kill Cubans (the enemy of the week) because they were dirty commies and Fidel Castro had a beard.

Even as an adolescent looking for "manhood" via the marines I thought this was a pretty flimsy reason to kill folks. My radicalization was re-started (I came from a family of socialists) with that idiot's little speech.
