Yet another Repug conversion story....
Not! Sorry folks, not this time. As a matter of fact this is exactly what I would like to comment on. Specifically, the heart felt unsubstantiated stories about parents, uncles, brothers, sisters, co-workers, and others having an "epiphany" and changing their world view.

To me, many of these stories have a tinge of wishful thinking or perhaps literary license rather than reality. Basically I want to go on record as saying, some of the conversion stories I have read here recently dont pass the smell test - for me personally. Yes I am a cynic and I don't believe that people make wholesale changes in their world view (translation: political ideology) overnight. I believe people that do change their world views, do it in a much more gradual sense. One that is almost imperceptible to those around them.

I'm sorry folks, I am not trying to be a wet blanket here, but many of these stories I have read sound all too much like generic internet urban legends, FUD, or simply someone "wanting to believe things are changing" and have derived a story to support that belief. Objectively, we get little to no facts, we get a single posters account or the situation, and we get a lot of "oh isn't that great" in the thread. But no questions. Why ? Do we just assume that what everybody posts is "true" and should go "unquestioned"? I'm just askin'

So for what its worth, I am not buying into much of this kind of posting. Perhaps if I was here on a more regular basis I could ask posters for verification before the threads have 50+ responses. Unfortunately every time I see one of these I am a day late and a dollar short of making any significant contribution.

So... thats my rant. I'm not looking for any kind of flame-fest here and actually will avoid responding to any such comments. I am only asking please, next time there is one of these lame ass conversion stories, ask the poster some substantive questions and get some references. Bottom line, if you can't back it up.. why waste our time and the bandwidth posting it ?

Thanks for listening and not flaming...... now back to business as usual.

1. I actually had a lovely conversation with a GOPer, not one of those crazy
repuke types, this weekend, who told me the current regime was nuts. He'll never be a dem but it was nice to know not all GOPers support chimp.

3. I actually believe the conversion stories.
Well... most of them. And I really do think that -- if they're true -- they serve a good purpose in that they keep our spirits up and keep us talking to our nutball neighbors. (Of course, if they're not true: well, a pox on those posters!) You can't really expect people to provide evidence for personal anecdotes -- and I think personal stories do have a place here.

As for me, I have seen no conversions among my insane family members. But I'm hoping.

4. We've known several "road to Damascus" type voting conversions
especially during the run-up to the election. These folks haven't changed their tune, either. They are vastly unhappy with what has happened to the Republican party.

The more information we give to those who are already disenchanted with the Republican party and their current leadership, the better equipped those people are to draw their own conclusions.

6. Absolutely.. and you are dead on about the information point
I so agree - changing votes based on information is a completely different animal than some magical moment where they now see as we do. I really am trying to find words but you hit on it... change the vote and perhaps that will make a "small" change in their "world view". Exactly my point about these kind of conversions being gradual rather than dynamic and complete from the start.
